Far too many people are complaining about the ending

Do you all not understand that Obi Wan could not have killed Vader. It would have created a gigantic plot hole in the prior films. He had to let Vader live. Its amazing so many on here just don't get that

reply

Agreed. The fight was EPIC….and Obi Wan showing mercy was consistent with his character. It was a fantastic episode.

reply

No one thinks that he was going to kill Vader - it's that there's no rational reason for it.

reply

If I recall, before this series was released, you didn't think it would be a good idea if Obi Wan and Vader would meet. Do you still feel that way? What a boring series that would have been

reply

Dude was crying his eyes out. He was completely irrational. Neither one of these numbnuts think clearly around each other.

reply

Almost like that was the point with the scene! Amazing!

reply

I like how the Emperor was like, "stay the hell away from that guy." He knows what's up.

reply

Man, Vader really got his ass handed to him by Palpy there. He wasn't angry, he was disappointed.

Exactly! This happens in every movie and show where someone does something stupid or irrational. People start screaming: “bad writing!”.

It’s not bad writing. It makes total sense for Obi Wan to not kill Vader. He raised him and loves him like a brother. Then seeing him so decrepit when the mask got blown off broke his heart.

That is why, in part, Yoda and Obi Wan didn’t tell Luke Vader is his father. They wanted someone not caring about Vader facing him so that he could finally be killed.

That only works for ROTS.

Vader literally tells him in this that Anakin isn't his failure, he killed him. It's funny because they were probably patting themselves on the back on this line kind of leaning into the OT and Obi-Wan saying Darth destroyed Anakin.

Only problem is this writing literally gives Obi-Wan a free pass to kill Vader. He's literally just told him he wasn't the same person. Therefore Obi-Wan should have had no problems taking care of business.

The fact that he didn't places a horrible retcon on the OT (if anyone was actually counting this as canon) as, like you said, Obi-Wan and Yoda are seen now to be pretty much trying to trick an unknowing Luke into killing his own father!

Absolutely horrible, appalling writing.

People are complicated. For Obi Wan, Vader saying Anakin is dead was not enough to kill him. It’s not bad writing. Obi Wan has conflicting emotions.

Obi Wan and Yoda tricking Luke into killing Vader has been canon since, at least, ESB. ROTJ for sure. It is not a recon.

reply

Well we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

I would have agreed with you re Obi-Wan's conflicting emotions, especially when he sees Anakin however, as per my previous post, I think they got too smart for their own good. Setting up Vader as almost an evil identity who has destroyed Anakin makes Obi-Wan's actions nonsense. They could have just left that out to achieve the effect you like but having it in there is just sloppy.

As for the tricking Luke - only partially in ESB before he finds out himself. In ROTJ, yes they still want him to kill Vader but it's no trick, everyone is knows who he is.

The retcon caused by this show however isn't that per se though - it's tricking him to do it when Obi-Wan could have taken care of Vader himself.

reply

This POINTLESS TV show is a plothole as it is.

reply

Until people show the will power like myself, Disney will continue to pump out Star Wars TV series. I refuse to give one penny to a company like Disney.

reply

I think they missed a unique opportunity to have Obi-Wan kill Darth, erase the original trilogy, and establish a new timeline like JJ did with the Kelvin universe in Star Trek. Give Disney its own timeline and let them do whatever they want with it and suddenly all the nonsense makes sense.

reply

It would have been interesting if Obi Wan did kill Vader and then the emperor went back in time and changed the events in order for him to survive. It worked in Endgame

reply

That would have given them years of material to play and work with and get the fanbase all riled up. AKA talking about Star Wars AKA invested interest. It's just these sort of chances they're not taking that's the main problem with Disney Star Wars. Trying to be safe and just fill in story is only going to make more continuity problems. You gotta make waves.
