Very good start

Hopefully the quality continues after the pilot episode. Melissa Roxburgh is excellent as the lead and her supporting cast seems great as well. Love the premise, imagine skipping ahead 5 and a half years?

I thought it was solid. Not great, but good enough to where I'll give it at least one more episode.

I am always very skeptical of network TV. Frankly, I just don't think the non-cable networks make very good shows on average. But as you say, the premise here is interesting and the execution is good enough so far.

I'd give the pilot a 7/10.

reply

Agreed. 7/10
Best thing so far is that it didn't get outright stupid (which most shows cannot help but do). However, it was not great. I'll watch another two or three to see what happens. I like the premise.
I suspect that I won't like the whole doctor subplot. Her brother made reasonable points. It's not like they aren't denying hundreds of other candidates too. There was no moral issue but it was portrayed that way. We'll see.

Yeah, I've been looking for some good new shows to watch, so I'm really hoping that this one will succeed. I can't say I'm especially hopeful. I can easily see it fizzling out after a few episodes and then I just move on to something else, but I have my fingers crossed that it will prove to be a show worth watching.

One thing I'll say is that, just based on the premise, it seems like it might work better as a 10-episode limited series than an open-ended story. But we'll see.

Regarding the doctor subplot, I feel you but I do think that, since they indicated the kid would be taken on for the study, they should take him. There's a special kind of viciousness that comes with handing out hope like that and then taking it away.

reply

They should have treated him "unofficially" on the side so as to not pollute their data with a supernatural candidate. That's all I wanted from them. Emotional writing can be great but not when done in opposition to a superior weight of reason. But hey, I could be fine with this. A minor blip that made me close one eye in potential future displeasure. I want to know what happens. I really hope this doesn't turn into Under the Dome. It's much more sophisticated so far but time will tell. I pledge three episodes ... maybe more.

reply

Yeah, we'll just see how it goes.

I very rarely get invested in network shows. I am watching This Is Us right now, but before that show the last network shows I really got into were a couple of Fox shows--Sleepy Hollow and Wayward Pines--and even with those two I lost interest after what ended up being a significant quality drop after the first seasons. (For whatever reason, Fox tends to have a slightly higher batting average with me than ABC/NBC/CBS, though they have a significant problem with maintaining their shows' momentum after the first season.)

With Manifest, I'm just going to take it one episode at a time. If I'm still here by the end of the season I'll be surprised, but it will be a pleasant surprise.

reply

I will wait and see.

Solid enough second episode. I'm going to stick with my rating of a weak 7. Not A-level TV, but still entertaining and good enough to keep going.

I feel like the show works best when it's focused on the mystery and begins to flounder when it starts focusing on all the relationship drama. But luckily, it seems to remember that at the show's heart is a mystery that needs to be figured out.

All in all, I'm pleased the story didn't lose all its momentum after the pilot.

reply

I agree. Just watched episode two and it remains very enjoyable and entertaining. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

It shows that at least the show can go two episodes without starting to suck. That's something of an accomplishment and hopefully bodes well for the future.

I do wonder how long this premise can be drawn out though. Just conceptually, it seems like something that would probably work better as a 10-ep limited series that a multi-season show. I am trying to imagine the show being on its third season and still being good.
