Colombia's coach fuming at refs after loss to England!

Pekerman complains about the refereeing!

This is after a very rough game between Colombia and England where the ref lost control of the pitch...

Colombia's coach Pekerman says there is something going on with football and that there is a lot of confusion around refereeing... He says football must be 'saved' from this confusion!

This at the very begining of the post-match press conference... He says the interruption in play did not suit their style of football... When asked directly about the criticisms of Colombian players fouls and rough play, he says that too many fouls and penalties were given as players collide and that it was helped England's style of aerial play and didn't allow for 'football' to be played πŸ€”... He says this has happened throughout tournament and highlighted England's match with Tunisia... Interesting to say the least...

Worth checking out if you want to see a completely different football worldview... fascinating how different their perspective is...

This isn't the same as Mexico's coach complaining about Neymar's antics and saying that football is supposed to be a manly sport... I think it's a more fundemantal difference in viewpoint re: football...

Also, in the same Press Conference Southgate sidestepped the initial question about refereeing, but when asked about why England players weren't as strong as previous generations and were falling at the slightest touch, he responded that England are smarter now and that they now play the game the way everyone else does πŸ€”... He was noticably irritated as it was clear that the whole thing bothered him... But overall he handled it well πŸ‘... Very passionate guy...

By the way, the FIFA channel on youtube is excellent for high quality match highlights and full unedited press conferences 😎

Colombia were a disgrace to watch, they didn’t come to play football that night, the American ref was also very weak and should of never allowed so many of them to crowd him for 4 minutes when England were awarded a penalty.

I watch international Rugby too and the difference in attitude between players towards the referee is worlds apart, in Rugby they respect any decision like adults, and get on with the game.

Its sad footballers from many nations have such little respect for the referee and act like spoiled children, but it’s been like this for decades.

Also did you see the Colombian coach barge into Raheem Sterling as he was coming off the pitch at half time? What a sad clown, I’m so glad Colombia are out!

The ref was very weak...

Compare to the good Ref of the epic Uruguay vs. Portugal match and it's like watching a different sport. Playacting was ignored mostly in the 2nd half, although he was fooled in the 1st and even Ronaldo got a yellow card for getting in the ref's face...

Also compare to the solid ref in Colombia vs. Japan, which had an early red card against Colombia, but the match continued with a high level of play...

Two very different refs in terms of the amount of contact allowed and speed to use cards/give fouls, but both refs were firm and made it very clear what was expected early in the match...

On the other hand, Geiger (?), the ref of the Colombia vs. England match had lost entire control of the match almost from the begining... It was not clear what he was, or wasn't allowing and none of the players respected him... There were points where he was physically backing down!

And now Maradona has gone on Argentine TV to say that the ref is biased towards England and that the match was 'stolen'... A bit ironic from him πŸ˜‚... mr. 'Hand of God'... I think at this stage he just wants the headlines...

I watch Tennis so the attitude towards gamesmanship and umpires is very different! But it is not a contact sport...

I think the solution is to have stronger refs... maybe only allow the captains to raise issues with the refs or do a challenge system like tennis, where each team has one challenge, where they can request VAR to review the ref's call... But with football, contact and such is open to interpretation sometimes, unlike in Tennis... FIFA should consider options and work with the leagues to come up with a proper standard...

Anyway, lots of drama this World Cup... Excellent penalties to end that match...

P.S. I heard about the Sterling incident, but didn't see it on my broadcast...

How come Maradona wasn’t in an episode of Miami Vice? They could have based an entire season around him!

Asif Kapadia is making a documentary about his time at Napoli, but I think he's worth a proper narrative feature film as well...
