The Simon Kinberg-directed-produced and co-written all femme action movie The 355 seemed like a perfect title for Universa,l to acquire domestic on at $20M, the movie fitting in its theatrical slate which is about diversity and representation. However critics and moviegoers have detected a by-the-numbers action film, and that bad word of mouth is deep-sixing The 355 with a $4.3M result in 3rd place.

The star-packed female spy action pic The 355 is flailing in its box office debut, grossing $1.7 million from 3,145 theaters on Friday for a projected opening in the $4 million range.

The movie’s poor showing comes as a surge in COVID-19 cases due to the highly infectious omicron variant further spooks older female moviegoers, the target demo for The 355. Simon Kinberg directs the film, which stars Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz, Fan Bingbing, Diane Kruger and Lupita Nyong’o.

Poor reviews also aren’t helping. Audiences liked it more, giving the movie a B+ CinemaScore.

The 355, a passion project for Chastain, is from Universal and FilmNation and is the first Hollywood studio release of 2022.

Friday’s audience was led by females (52 percent), with 80 percent of ticket buyers over the age of 35, including 38 percent over 45, according to PostTrak.

The 355 is tipped to come in third for the weekend behind holdovers Spider-Man: No Way Home and Sing 2.

No Way Home, staying atop the chart, earned roughly $8 million on Friday from 4,012 theaters for a projected weekend of $30 million. By Sunday, the Sony and Marvel pic’s domestic total should be close to $670 million — one of the best numbers of all time — thanks to male moviegoers ages 18-34.

Universal and Illuminations’ Sing 2 is holding at No. 2 with a projected weekend of $10.3 million from 3,713 locations. Sometime over the weekend, it will become the first family animated film of the pandemic era to cross $100 million domestically.

Jessica, you worked with Kinberg on Dark Phoenix and you must had known the writer also did Catwoman. She has a producer credit on this. She should had known better.

reply

I thought Ava was her passion project?

reply

Was it? Yeesh.

reply

I actually liked Ava, so that is cool with me. Underrated action flick.

reply

It looks like a very generic female-led action movie. There are like five of these a year. Didn't Chastain do this already with Ava? I think it grossed $4 million. Just doesn't work...

reply

It can if you have a good story and make a good movie. But when you go into a project with the primary goal being to make a point on "diversity and inclusion", the end result is often crap. And audiences pick up on that quickly.

Maybe Jessica can tackle an all lady Western next. 1994's "Bad Girls" proved how fertile that ground is.

reply

You would have thought the Hollywood accountants would have reminded the producers of the female ghostbusters turd.

reply

Atomic Blond is a decent example.
100 mil box office on a 30 mil budget. Not a power horse but made some money ...

Even the Old Guard which IS a woke fest was way better because it had somewhat decent and interesting story.

reply

I liked Atomic Blonde well enough.

The Old Guard I turned off halfway though and never went back to it. To my recollection it started out OK but quickly devolved.

reply

I finished The Old Guard, but I think it would have been done better as a limited series. Where we get time to see them kick ass throughout the centuries and have a better band of villains.

The movie was just alright, could have been done so much better.

reply

I never did see Bad Girls. Maybe I should check it out.

reply

It's awful. But there are worse ways to spend 100 minutes than watching Madeleine Stowe, Drew Barrymore, Andie MacDowell and Mary Stuart Masterson. Bad movie, awful "western".

reply

I see it has a 5.2 on IMDB and a 13% on IMDB. That does sound shitty, but in a way it just does more to pique my curiosity.

I didn't even realize it had Drew Barrymore. I'll have to track it down.

reply

ouch...

Sadly Hollywood thinks the "if you build it they will come" Hollywood nonsense was reality and if they keep churning out woke garbage that people will see it... they seem to have forgotten that people have so many choices beyond the theaters that they don't have to go piss away their time and money watching woke shit simply because its on 9 out of 10 screens.

reply

yup! ^^^ this!

woke doesn't automatically mean entertaining. no thanks
