I am watching it now. I never read the original story. Nor have I seen the Disney classic, besides a few clips over the years.

I liked it, valuable lessons for everyone. The puppet was a gullible blockhead! Eventually I will see the Disney film, and possibly read the book. I did not know it came out in the 1880's. There is another version coming out this year. I recall Sesame Street, spoofed the puppet decades ago. Kermit interviewed him.
