Pointless killing monsters

Every monster should have a reason for being in a film. Some monsters kill to feed themselves, some aliens invade for resources. Some are parasites. These things just run around and trample and stab for no reason. It feels like an incomplete monster.

The origin should be adressed in the third movie

reply

I'm good with that. I don't need to know what motivates them--I just need to know they're scary and dangerous. This is just a fun popcorn movie.

reply

Have you seen Alien? The Thing? Manos, Hands of Fate?

Okay, don't bother w/Manos. But if you're confused about motivation vs. narrative efficiency, check out the first two flicks. Clear it right up for ya.

reply

youre saying the xeno and the thing had no real motivation?

reply

I'm saying the OP "Every monster should have a reason for being in a film" is flatly wrong. There are countless movies (two of which I named) where the "reason" for the monsters matters not at all. They do, indeed, just "run around and kill things." You could argue that decades later, when they tried to explore the origins/reasons, is where the Alien sequels failed.

reply

They did have "motivations" ...

like survive, feed, dominate, multiply.

So far we see none of that in this movie. Just some monsters running around and bashing things or killing ...

reply

This is what I’m saying, they don’t eat people for sustenance, they just slash and stab some things that makes sound, not everything just what is convenient for the story

reply

It's a difference between having interesting monsters vs. non-interesting monsters. If the monsters are interesting, you don't care about their motivation. If they aren't interesting, you do.

reply

We don't see them feeding, but I guess you can assume they are eating people. They are extremely aggressive and attack at any sound, but they need to eat at some point. Maybe once all threats are clear then they eat. I'm OK with the monsters having no other motive than this.

reply

The movie is presented from the perspective of the human survivors. They don't know if the aliens have plans for world conquest, or just eat humans for food, or just kill because they want some GD peace and quiet around here. It makes them scarier.

My bet is that they are an advance guard of bio-engineered killers sent in to purge the planet of intelligent life so the intelligent aliens can move in and colonize later.

reply

Bingo! That's my guess, and I enjoyed the second movie enough to see part 3. I don't know if they will even begin to supply an answer, particularly because, if the monsters are designed specifically to kill off all humans, it could be years or decades before the arrival of their... operators.

reply

bioweapon is most likely but its also important to note that when it comes to philosphy we have a sample of one. We have no fucking idea if we could even comprehend the motivations of actual aliens if we ever meet them.

reply

They hate the noise pollution you make.

Bioweapons dont need reasons to kill.
