Horrible :(

So this movie's Bluray has already leaked online and I made the mistake of watching it because I'm a huge fan of the Doom games.

Holy shit, this movie's terrible! First of all there is no Doom guy. In his place is a woman who has zero looks and charisma, and even worse acting skills. She tries to be a tough "empowered" badass who is like a cross between Ripley and Alice from Resident Evil (the movie borrows heavily from both Aliens and RE, although it ends up looking like a project shot by high school students with a budget running into tens of dollars). This 120 lb chick beats up fast zombies and manhandles Hell knights along with 2 others, while the typical male marines are shown to be mostly morons who are told to shut up by the women and run like cowards at the sightings of the monsters, while the women stay behind and kick ass.

Surprisingly, the movie stays true to the source in some ways - there is a Dr Betruger who is the villain, there is a BFG, which the marine chick uses while the nerdy hipster soy boy playing one of the scientists timidly stands behind her and sheepishly smiles while admitting he's still scared of using elevators. There is a brief scene in hell where you can see imps, hundreds of which are taken out by the lead chick with a couple of plasma grenades while executing an Alice like move.

Overall, this movie's cast, dialogue and production values make it look like a C grade version of a campy B grade movie from the 70s. The forced feminist agenda makes an already subpar movie insufferable and makes you realize that the 2005 version with Karl Urban and the Rock was a masterpiece in comparison. I give it a 3/10 and don't think it's going to take the box office by storm.

The Doomguy's corpse is in the movie. :D

Agree, I only watched half of the movie but it already looks like a cheap Aliens ripoff with zombies.

Haha they also had an Easter egg reference with a character named Blazkowicz, who is from Wolfenstein.

I didn't have high hopes after watching the trailer, but this movie still let me down. A well made quasi-horror Doom movie with an R18 rating, lots of gore and a strong male lead to play the Doom guy would be fucking awesome to see!

reply

Isn't Blazkowicz also the Doomguy's real name? BTW, the chainsaw scene was quite badass.

reply

Damn, I didn't know that! Learn something new everyday. I thought they were referencing Wolfenstein because it's another ID software game.

Doomguy gets around ech?

reply

Haha yeah this was bad. I too much like you gave it a go due to being a huge fan of the original DooM (finished all three episodes on Nightmare as a kid!!).

Everything you've said was spot on, I was already worried 20mins in when they spent a lot of time on the chick... I was thinking "Oh no... they're not gonna actually do a 'Doom guy' are they? It's gonna be her!" and then I would see the Captain with the sawn off, and the aussie guy who LOOKED like DooM guy (but his accent, script and acting did not work...) I realised it was all over before it began haha.

Thing is... I actually think DooM could be done really really well as a film. It just needs to be handled properly, something along the lines of a Rodgriguez/Tarantino's 'From Dusk Till Dawn' style, 1hr15mins of sensible character plot/building stuff with just a 20-30mins of absolute wtf genre changing gorefest splatter fest from the only survivor DooM guy etc. It would at least set a precedence that these kinda computer game films could really be done well if properly handled. I hope Half Life is one day made into a proper film with big names attached to it.

Sigh.. such a shame.

Yes, Half Life and Doom need to be made by someone who's played the games and understands how to make the movie so it's faithful to the source material. Both could be great as R18 semi-horror (esp. Doom) action movies with the right cast, a good script and zero political messages or correctness that ruins everything.

So many interesting game universes that Hollywood could tap into, like Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, Thief and more, yet they keep churning out remakes and PC versions that nobody wants to watch :(

Sounds hilarious. I saw the trailer when it was released and it was pretty obvious that they had fucked this whole thing up and it was going to be a low-budget cash grab.

I'll still watch it though, just to see what a train wreck it is.

>because I'm a huge fan of the Doom games.

See, right there is your mistake. videogame movies should never be watched if you are a fan, only if you dont care much for the franchise. Only by ignoring the videogame itself do they ever become enjoyable. A great example is the dead or alive movie. I dont know how accurate it is to the games but its a great absurd comedy and its clearly aware of that.

>This 120 lb chick beats up fast zombies and manhandles Hell knights along with 2 others

Except she doesnt. She either fires a weapon or evades. The one time she gets into hand-to-hand combat she almost dies.

>marines are shown to be mostly morons

Pretty much a staple of bad sci-fi movies im afraid, but yes utter moronic actions by this squad, no wonder they were sent to the worst ass of space.

> the 2005 version with Karl Urban and the Rock was a masterpiece in comparison.

I wouldnt go so far as masterpiece but it certainly was far more enjoyable, yes.

>I give it a 3/10 and don't think it's going to take the box office by storm.

With an average rating of 3,6 id say you're spot on.
