Seems boring (edit, it's slow but not boring)

Ep1 was sloooooow and boring. I'm guessing the 'sex robot' thing is just for the description, to make it seem edgier and more interesting than it really is.

edit: the series really picks up steam as it goes and becomes more interesting but the sex robot thing is what I thought, to make it seem edgier than it is, and make the corporate execs seem sleezy. Mid-thigh skirts is about as racy as it gets.
edit2: The show is really slow in that hardly any actor moves or does anything, it's mostly talking but the story is interesting and the characters are compelling.

I just watched the first episode myself. I mean, I can see where you're coming from, but I didn't think it was all that bad. Comparing this against that steaming pile of crap, Another Life, this is way better. At least there's some plot elements I'm interested to follow.

reply

I want to like this but everyone talks slow, moves slow, the plot is dull. Haven't seen Another Life but I heard it's bad.

reply

It gets better.
I felt the same way after the first episode but by episode 2 all of the sub-plots have been revealed & you can start to see the direction in which the show is heading.
As an English speaker I personally found having the subtitles displayed helped with that ‘lag’ & the ‘disconnect’ you often feel when a show is dubbed.
And I too agree it’s better than ‘Another Life’ - a show which took me about 5 episodes to be won over by although I never really cared for ANY of the characters.

reply

I'll give ep 2 a try.

reply

I won’t lie, the show is still very slow but I have found the teenage son’s storyline interesting enough to keep going (I’m on Ep 4) and the sfx are so subtle that you kind of take them for granted.
Despite the old car the main character drives around in (which I think is weird given how advanced their societal technology has become) I think the sfx are quite well done.
It definitely not the most accessible show I’ve ever watched but I’m still hanging in there.

reply

Episode 2 was better, the characters more engaging, and I'll probably finish the series. Thanks for the encouragement.

reply

So did you finish it? I just finished episode 8 and I'm discouraged...

reply

I did finish it and it's like the cast is on Xanax or something, zero energy. Humans did this concept way better.

I had this problem too when subtitles and words spoken by characters didn't match. Luckily I found easy fix. All you need to do is go to settings and choose English subtitles (CC), instead of non CC version. After that subtitles and characters words match 100%. Unfortunately you need to do this every time before starting the episode. Seems like Netflix doesn't save that setting.

Also, I think dubbing in this TV show is done very well. Words match their mouths. I even forget that I'm watching non-English TV show. If you find dubbing in this TV show bad, than you clearly haven't seen dubbed Marianne (French TV show).

reply

I usually do subtitles and don't mind them...but I agree that the dubbing in this show is the best I've ever seen.
I've done both because bedtime is tough on reading subtitles.

reply

I agree with you, it's tiring to read subtitles especially when it's late, but I usually use them, because English isn't my native language and sometimes people talk too fast for me to understand them. Another thing I don't like about subtitles is that, you're actually keeping your eyes on subtitles instead of ongoing picture on screen, so basically you're reading instead of watching just with ongoing picture on the background.

reply

I found Another Life pretty boring although we made it through the whole season just because we felt like we should. I think we are getting season 2, I'm not sure why.

reply

To The Lake, has many of the same actors as Better Than Us, and the same slow pacing and morose tone. Haven't seen Another Life but I read it was boring and haven't been itching to watching it.

reply

The two main characters in Another Life were ok, but the supporting characters were all pretty annoying. They were supposed to be, I don't remember, military personnel, or something, and they were all very beautiful and whiny. I don't think the military tolerates such whiny people and I certainly don't want to watch them whining. It should go into the official manuals for all tv shows. No whiny characters. Such a turn-off to viewers. Pick any other flaw and we'll accept it, just not that one.

Ok, I think I'm done whining now.

reply

How's this compared to To the lake? I loved that show so if's close to the same style i would totally watch it.

reply

Well like I said, same actors, same tone, but the plot is robots evolving human emotions.

reply

Yeah, not even close to "To the lake".

But not bad either, works in the background with no need for 100% attention ...

reply

I felt the same about both, playes in the background while I'm working on the laptop.

reply

I disagree. I think it's very interesting and clean TV show without unnecessary sex scenes and cursing. I don't find it slow or boring. Characters are well developed and acting is good. Also dubbing is done quite well. Sometimes I even forget that I'm watching non-English TV show. Words match their mouth well.

reply

I'm not scared to use the word "boring". I was bored for more than half of the series. It took me a couple of months to complete it. I'd say it really starts being interesting towards episode 10 or 11. Then it goes from "interesting" to "good" and by the end of it, it was VERY good. I had a feeling I had to go through it all to appreciate it. But it was quite painful in the beginning.

reply

Yeah I went back and forth, I agree with your assessment.

reply

I think we got up to episode 5 and then we lost the will to keep going forward. Maybe we'll go back to it, but I'm not sure. The same male actor is in To The Lake which was gripping.

reply

If you decide to go on with it I don't think you'll regret it. It seems pretty unanimous here that the more the series progresses, the better it gets. From some point, it goes crescendo until the end.

reply

I feel the same way, I really wanted to see it because the plot line sounded awesome and I have no problem with subtitles. I just couldn’t get into it, I sort of lost interest and found myself easily distracted. . .which for me is pretty common to be honest but it was a real struggle to keep watching.
