The penultimate episode of Season 1 of the Beverly Hills, 90210 revival series was down 14% over last week's episode.

What a shame, I really think this is a fun show.

The producers and actors probably should've done a better job explaining the concept. I'm not sure that viewers were ready for some Curb Your Enthusiasm-like, pseudo-reality based, meta-textual type show. Plus, I'm willing to bet that viewers want to see more of Shannen Doherty (since Luke Perry, even had he not passed away, wasn't going to be apart of it due to his Riverdale schedule), and she has for the most part been kind of an enigma.

Figured it was risky...the original 90210 was meh yes until they brought on luke...look @ the pilot for that if you do not believe me.

I remember when I saw 'the green room' I thought it was just my racing hormones but I went back and watched it as adult. WOW! He woke up an otherwise forgettable show. Good thing they essentially reshot the series with him in it and early on.

He also helped the entire Fox network build itsellf. Good going Luke!! I can watch anything with him in it.

It is a 'bad omen' that Luke died. He could have helped carry a revival show. And they should have done that much earlier. That should have been the reboot.

Yes it would have gone on for a very long time---Brenda and Dylan married like they were always supposed to be!!

Grosse Pointe (on WB when it existed) did a better job with other actors apparently spoofing the real life actors and their characters.

Joe E. Tata and Jason Priestly guest stared in case people did not understand the connection. Enjoyed it much better.

But this was the era of reality TV overload., the WB had not thought of a better name for the show ('grosse' sounded like "gross" unfortunately) and it was difficult to adequately promote the show with their budget. So it never broke out for a second season and could not help establish that network.

And that was also a shame....because it was produced by Darren Starr....yes the same guy involved w Beverly Hills 90210. Probably could have written several seasons based on his behind the scenes work.

Interesting, I actually thought Dylan was a very annoying character. I don't think he did more for the show than Brandon/Jason Priestley. The entire first season, which was more episodic like Degrassi High, had poor ratings. The show gained popularity during the summer of 1991, when Fox aired a special "summer season" of the show while most other series were in reruns and the storylines turned more soapy.

reply

no he was the one who saved it.

Perry was brought on by Aaron Spelling. Actually the studio was anxious about him and Spelling initially paid out of his own pocket for Perry who is prominently featured in that summer season.

He is injured, he recuperates at the Walsh house, his mom visits, his dad is out of prison.....etc. Lots of storylines prominently feature him for a reason

At least he did come back and save the franchise once, right? That's something. Gave it some more seasons.

reply

"no he was the one who saved it."

Uhm no. Like I said, the ratings only improved during the summer season, not when Dylan got more screen time after the reshoots. And there were multiple reasons for that. I'm sure the hearttrob status of both Perry and Priestley contributed, but you need to come up with better evidence to prove that it was Luke Perry in particular that improved the ratings. I don't believe at all the ratings would be any better if Perry had been part of this show.

Look @ the pilot w out him and watch the Lifetime movie about the show's behind the scenes. Those are accurate

reply

Adding Luke Perry may very well have been an improvement, but it's something else to say he saved the show.

reply

look @ the lifetime movie.

reply

Lifetime movies aren't exactly a reliable source. It's called "unauthorized" for a reason.

reply

Holy crap. I can’t believe I just read somebody use a Lifetime movie as evidence of anything. This is certainly something I never thought I’d read.
