Re: Ep 2

So I just finished it and it seemed to serve no purpose. There was no advancement in the story and we learned nothing that couldn't be shown in any later episode. As of now, it seems like a waste.

There are going to be about 2 more filler eps coming up as well.

In some ways this show is like a road movie. Not everything that happens is directly tied to advancing the main plotline, they're simply adventures that happen along the way. And some of these things actually do matter later on (I won't say which since you just finished Ep. 2). They're making an effort to balance both self-contained and overarching stories here. Eps. 1 & 2 almost seem like they were written as a single pilot that was then split into two parts. I'm guessing you'll like the next one better.

IMO, when you have a 8 episode series with 40 minutes episodes, you need to keep it moving. Filler episodes shouldn't me made. But after watching all of it, I can see where Ep2 did play a role for later development.

I think the traveling gunfighter weekly adventure thing is part of the point. Some shows are entirely about the serialized plot, and their seasons are basically multi part movies, while others juggle the main plotline with smaller self contained stories - this is one of the latter. The same way as a road movie doesn't normally pare itself down to just those scenes and scraps of dialogue that advance whatever larger goal motivated the trip. Sometimes experiences and character development/bonding are purpose enough.

You may prefer series that keep their eyes firmly fixed on the prize and don't go off on tangents. For some plot concepts, I agree that's the best way to go. But I think they've basically achieved what they were setting out to do with The Mandalorian. There are aspects of it I might've done differently, but overall I like the grab bag of different episode types. And they certainly did come back to the central issues in the last two. Closing out one chapter and setting the stage for the next.

I think I sorta said that. Just shorter.

My point was, they're not really filler.

There will be elements of this episode that become important later.

But even aside from that, just the fact that we learn that Baby Yoda is force sensitive is important enough. And that he chose to use it to save Mando, and wanted to heal his injured arm shows that he's already developing feelings for him.

Sometimes it's about the journey and not the destination. Story telling, world building and character development are important in an ongoing series.

If it were only about story advancement, then the entire season would fit neatly into a movie and not a series.

I like a show that stops to smell the roses along the way.

At the risk of spoiling the rest of the season, I'll just say that some events in episode 2 are significant.
