Completely unrealistic that he wasn't already with Lily

She was gorgeous, completely in love with the guy...and for fifteen years or so he just kind of...remained oblivious?
Goddang she was beautiful, did you notice how pretty she was? Good God man..

Anyway, was strange enough that she'd move on so fast from being in love with him for so long, but at the same time, he'd have had that coming. EXCEPT...apparently he was in love with her the entire time too, was the thing! He just kind of forgot, I guess...because that love-struck goofball never once tried to find out if it was reciprocated or not. Because whatever might be common in that situation, it definitely has nothing to do with a burning yearning to feel whole...or maybe even like your soul is being sucked through that gaping hole in your heart into lonely oblivion, day after day.

Nope, you remember you're in love with someone when they bring it up years later. But your career is just taking off, so...you'll be real sorry about stuff, but gosh dangit, you REALLY have to go. My bad!

But the very moment you find out she's seeing someone else? Instant misery...you'll be screaming for help from a motel rooftop moments later, during the pinnacle of your life's achievement thus far.

None of it really makes any sense IMO. Okay, maybe he loved her, but he definitely wasn't "in love" with her. IMO anyway. The whole thing was off somehow...

I enjoyed the movie but I agree.
She is gorgeous and was practically throwing herself at him.
Any hot blooded male would have been all over that.

Oop, forgot to mention that. Yeah I really liked it as well. Seemed like the definitive "cute" movie. But yeah, she was beautiful enough that, unless he was gay, they'd have hooked up next to immediately, I imagine.

reply

I agree. Zooey Deschanel would be the only other girl to fit that spot, especially the rocking out (seen "Yes Man" or "500 Days of Summer"?)

I think they sold the idea pretty well. Lily was de-glammed and quirky. They had been friends forever and he never saw her as a love interest, he thought of her like a sister. What was stupid was that he had to pick one or the other, a music career or settling down with her.

reply

Yeah that seemed a little forced, huh? How everything seemed to come down to timing...either/or situations. They had 15+ years, and now its coming down to same night stuff? CMON!

reply

People are funny though. They miss what's been in front of them their whole lives.

reply

Yeah I get it...its just that to the best of my recollection, he told her that he was in love with her...that he'd always been. And just speaking from firsthand experience of someone who's been in love with someone for most my life, I really think he'd have dang well knew it.
It just seemed weird that suddenly he was like, "OMG, you know what? I've totally been in love with you forever and just didn't realize it!!"

reply

15 years is the only part of the scenario that's questionable. Surely she would have said something long before then.

Lily James is so pretty makes you wonder why Matt Smith hasn’t ask to marry him yet alone the guy in the movie as well.

College buddy of mine had a girl as a friend who liked him so much she got a job in another city where he went to law school.

He actually used to complain about liking her romantically, and wishing she felt the same. So in this case, it was mutual and STILL somehow unrequited

Luckily we hammered the truth into his head hard enough that they've now been married 25 years

It happens.

Also - people are creatures of habit by nature. That applies especially to relationships, once roles have "solidified." That's why one of the most prevalent bits of advice for "getting out of the friend zone" is to change something up big time, so the other party sees you in a different light.

What I found interesting, and oddly believable, in this film was that the "different light" was success, and it made Ellie fall OUT of love with Jack. She loved him as a mediocre musician who, I guess, was "in her league."

reply

It was more unrealistic the plot premise!

reply

I agree. That lovely young woman, giving him huge obvious hints that she loved him, and he does nothing (until the end). In real life he would have to be extraordinarily stupid, or extraordinarily gay.
