The impersonations of Danny Devito by avatars

Firstly, I never thought of Danny as having an accent. I just accepted that that’s the way he talks. So when I start hearing some hammy impersonation of an east coast accent, I was like “huh?!”

I feel like the Rock screwed it up royally. It sounded like a New England accent not New Jersey.

The other girl was better (whoever she is) but overplayed it at times.

Seems many agree that Awkwafina (the Asian actress) did do a better job, which is funny considering she has way less experience as an actor than Dwayne Johnson. She seemed to nail some of the nuances better, as if she really studied and shadowed Danny DeVito for a while.

Film reviewer Alonso Duralde said Dwayne Johnson sounded more like a generic New Jersey retiree than Danny DeVito.

He over did the ending of words. Instead of the ER sound they use AH, and he overthought it. The change to AH in linguistics is a softening of speech, not added emphasis. So it was unnatural.

i much enjoyed Hart's impression of Danny Glover. i think that was aiight

the DeVito not so much.. and yes agree of the two Awkwafina = far better

She was good and I thought that’s why she got the part. She still overdid it a little, channeling a “grumpy old man” a little too much.

I agree. The Rock did a terrible DeVito, but it worked just because he was playing an old guy who didn't understand the concept of being inside a video game.

But yeah, I couldn't help cringing whenever The Rock said "Spenca?"

reply

Yeah it was so hammy. Danny’s accent isn’t even that noticeable to me (could be because I’m Australian and we have similar phonetics to east coasters.)

reply

I thought Awkwafina did a good job, the Rock at first, I thought he was doing a british accent and was confused.

reply

She did a decent job, but still, overboard. He's a new yorker, not an old jewish man.

reply

Being fair, theres a lot of overlap between these two categories.
