hmm, it's not clear in the series what was responsible for Debra's sudden decision

We see one moment how she scoffs at her daughter to John (regarding that birth certificate), but then it turns out she'd been plotting to divorce him the whole time? When did that "epiphany" happen?

Also, her soft-spoken manner makes me want to throttle her - am I the only one? πŸ™„

I agree, I was a little unclear about that too. I am glad that she wised up though....

Connie Britton is actually nailing the way the real Debra spoke - in the Dirty John podcast, I kept thinking that exact same thing...'why is she speaking so gently and pleasantly and laughing good naturally whilst re-telling the story of the hell that man put her through?!' To be fair, it is quite amazing how the woman didn't resort to swearing and raging over the guy - she really did seem like a kind and gentle soul. Her daughters on the other hand....

Well, yeah, I've seen Connie Britton in other things, I know that's not how she normally talks. But god is it annoying. It's like, get some energy to your voice, woman! Some assertiveness!

Amazing (to me, anyway) how she built her own successful business being like that.

reply

It really is amazing - she doesn't come across like a tough business woman at all. She must just really be good at interior design and marketing her brand - she would also have a good team around her I'd imagine.

Her daughters seem to have a lot more common sense than she does. I'd blame her, not them.

There is really no excuse for her being that desperate and naive at her age and given her status.

reply

I mean, seriously, she moved back in with him already AFTER she knew his criminal history.

There is no excuse.

I think when she woke up and saw him bleeding between his toes, and then found his drugs and knew he was back using again.

I really didn't dig this show at all. As you guys have said, it was really hard to sympathize with Debra much at all, which could be down to the writing, I'm not sure if the real life Debra was so infuriatingly clueless.

The only thing I really enjoyed was Eric Bana's performance.

She was totally clueless. Even after he was dead and she was going through his laptop in the Nevada house and she found out that he was actively engaging with other women in dating sites on their wedding day, she tells the interviewer on the podcast: β€œit made me FEEL like none of this was even real.” Ya think??? I’ll bet to this day she still thinks he loved her.
