Marie was so annoying

I get it, she was raped. She was traumatized. The show wanted to drill that point.

But goodness, every scene with her — she was crying, she was shouting at her friends, she was having an outburst, she was mouthing off, she was acting retarded and dumb when people spoke to her, she was having flashbacks at odd times. She handled the police stuff totally wrong.

She came across as unlikeable and really brought the show down.

I really liked the detective stuff with Rasmussen and Duvall. But Marie was the worst part of the show

When someone's life is spiraling totally out of control, they often don't put on a likeable and affable appearance or demeanor. Marie was angry with the world and everyone, and tried to push everyone away. So the depiction you saw of her was the point. To humanize a person, you don't necessarily make him or her "likable." To humanize them, you show their truly feelings, their psychology, and show where those feelings are coming from.

She made stupid decision after stupid decision and I'm supposed to feel sorry for her? I honestly believe she didn't deserve any money.

reply

I agree. She didn't deserve one cent from the city. She kept changing her story. The cops weren't changing it for her. It was all her. How should the cops be reliable when she recants, then recants the recant, etc.

reply

Lol totally agree with you...100% and also with MovieMadness down there.

Yeah she's been bent over the rails so much that she was just a sullen kid who had zero faith in others...didn't make for a very charismatic character!
Yeah, the two detectives were the best part of the show.

Watching first episode and came on here to see if I might have missed the fact she's intellectually challenged

reply

I agree. She constantly made horrible decisions.

I thought she gave a realistic portrayal of a shy girl who had been let down by the system and by adults all her life. Her freaking foster mom even threw her under the bus, thinking it was best for her. I don't blame the character, one bit.

I'm not sure why she has to be likeable. If anything that was kinda the point. That just because she might be annoying, frustrating or wasn't as lucky with her family situation like a lot of us doesn't make her any less of a victim.
