When does Max make the decision to leave?

I'm rewatching the last season and I must have missed it twice. In the finale he's like, i'm just moving to the other side of the world, F y'all. What? Where does this come from? It's so ludicrously stupid. He has the new romance and the kid and everything. But he's just jetting off to be a doctor without borders for no damn reason.
