D+ Cinemascore

reply

And that is funny because?

reply

critics love it, paying audiences loathe it

reply

Hmmm I have heard nothing but positive things from people.

reply

are you kidding me? there are a lot of negative reactions from ppl who came back from the theatres and expressing their negative emotions about this movie. it's not a review site (which are not always to be trusted) but just ppl commenting on a movie. It was borderline laughable towards the end. i've never been that disappointed with an ending like in this movie.

reply

Yes, teens don't like it. Seeing teens are generally the only people who go to movies these days, they are definitely not the people I want to recommend a movie. This movie is great. Don't listen to small minded teens who know nothing about movies.

reply

I am far from being a teen. Most people who actually KNOW me consider me to be rather intelligent. I AM NOT BRAGGING. I just quote what I have been told.

I found this one of the most mindless, stupid, boring, and certainly UNSCARY, movies I have seen.

Other than Toni Collette, the acting was abysmal.
To others who saw it with me agreed. The theater said the reactions were primarily negative.

reply

Again, the public usually never has good taste in movies. I listen to critics, who have seen many more movies of all types than the normal movie goer. They have a much better frame of reference. The upcoming Jurassic World is supposed to be abysmal, but I am sure it will make lots of money. Most of the haters of this movie will probably be loving Jurassic World. Go figure.

> "Again, the public usually never has good taste in movies"

EXCUSE ME???????????????????????

Just WHO are movies made for; critics or the general public?

So your idea is that you let critics do your thinking for you.
What happens when critics disagree?

Sorry! I dont let critics or anyone else do my thinking for me.
I actually look at previews and decide what I feel I will like.
I am usually right about 80% of the time so I guess I know myself pretty well.
There are some critics such as Own Gliberman who I can count on; if he hates it, I will love it and vice versa. Even then I rarely look to critics to make decisions for me.

My problem with THIS movie is that I didn't see a preview. My friend said there is a new "horror" movie opening and we just went to see it.
Perhaps I misunderstood. Maybe he said "horrible" movie.
I will have to listen more carefully next time!

reply

Hollywood movies are made for dummies. You all watch the same thing over and over again, and have the same reaction to some of the worst movies made..."Oh that was awesome". Also if you rely on just previews to decide on what you will see, then you really do have a problem. Previews are made for sheep. I take critical reaction, previews and reactions from other people I know who I feel have good taste in movies. It isn't always a home run, but for the most part, I leave the theater satisfied. This movie was great and the whiners who were expecting jump scares throughout, are the reason most movies suck these days.

The failure of this movie is not its sophistication but the cheesy, cliched resolution. I have seen people say they would have liked it a lot better if they cut out the “boring first two-thirds”, and okay: those people are dummies. But the ending of this movie is too dumb to ultimately be a “smart” work of cinema. (And the brilliant score is what partially saves it.)

reply

I don't know. I liked it. Reminded me the end of Rosemary's Baby somewhat.

reply

For sure: the director says RB is his favorite horror movie. But RB is just slightly tongue in cheek, which makes a huge difference.

reply

Rosemarys Baby shall not be even uttered in the same sentence as this dreck

reply

this was a hollywood movie. it also sucked hard. im convinced these idiots are paid shills.

reply

No one wants to read this

reply

You’re obviously not very intelligent if you’re gonna call this movie one of the most “unscary” movies you’ve ever seen. I’m sure you’ve seen atleast hundreds of comedies, action movies, romance movies, etc... and even horror movies that were far more “unscary” than this movie.

reply

I asked at the theater what the audience reaction was. They told me it was negative.
I totally agree with that.

reply

i think imdb is a good indicator of a films quality

reply

How do you explain 70% of Imdb votes are 8-10* ?

reply

Paid reviews of course, or are you that naive?

reply

Exactly. Big Foot writes those reviews with help from the Loch Ness Monster!

reply

Haha.

reply

I thought it was one of the scariest movies I have seen in a long time!

reply

hope you got a shiny nickel for saying so !

reply

I didn't mention reviews, you fucking RETARDS!
There are 5000+ votes, and imdb ignores most fakes.

Then there's metascore of 87. I suppose the JOOS paid them off too? What a bunch of conspiracy nuts. Take your meds!

reply

You’re making sense for once.

reply

> "How do you explain 70% of Imdb votes are 8-10* ?"

Very strange voters!

MY vote was a 2

reply

You will probably give Jurassic World a 10.

reply

Gosh!
Maybe I will, now that you seem to know so much about me that you have figured me out!

reply

Sorry to disillusion you
I went to Jurassic World with a friend. If it would not have been for him, I would have walked out.
I remember liking the first couple of movies but the third was UNWATCHABLE!
In its time, it was pretty amazing to see dinosaurs being "brought to life" on the big screen. This is commonplace today.
Jurassic World had little to offer. I found most of the characters unlikable. Including some we were supposed to like.
I wont comment further. This is not the board for that discussion.

reply

I definitely won't be seeing it. I still have to see Incredibles 2, so I can look forward to that one at least.

Because the OP is a sheep and a twit.

reply

I think it is an unsettling movie... It upsets people and therefore, the initial reaction by a lot of them is repulsion... I think that skews the scores downward...

This is not a feel-good movie, it's not tongue-in-cheek horror... It's not one of the cute jump-scare date movies (which can be a lot of fun)... It's a bit serious in tone and in subtext... I think audiences have become too used to standardised, pre-packaged horror movies... Horror candy... Junk food... So this movie is a challenge to their palate and taste buds...

So, people will have gone to the movie expecting their usual horror-fix and suddenly their presented with something very different from what they're used to, which is also a bit sad and disturbing... There was going to be some rejection...

reply

"I think audiences have become too used to standardised, pre-packaged horror movies... Horror candy... Junk food... So this movie is a challenge to their palate and taste buds..."

Spot on! This is my take on it as well. Heard lots of comments leaving the theater saying "man, that was boring" and I'm like wtf! It was one of the most interesting takes on a dried out genre in years. Apparently people just want to be spoon-fed cliched shit and jump scares these days to be able to maintain attention to the screen. Don't get me wrong, people are entitled to dislike the movie for whatever reasons, and it might sound pretentious AF but it just makes me sad when quality stuff like Hereditary is getting shit on because people don't "get it".

I do think the marketing of the movie is partly to blame. In the trailer it does look like your run-of-the-mill horror.

Sincerely,
Grumpy ol' guy

reply

I agree. It really delves into the process of guilt and how it turns into mental illness, or at least the first 2/3's of it are fantastic in that way. When the movie turns supernatural I thought it goes a bit off the rails but I mostly really liked this movie and would give it s B+.

Have a short review of this movie if anyone is interested- https://youtu.be/TtoecJPWnM4

reply

except its not unsettling AT ALL. it just tried to be. massive difference. this came off as boring, depressive (in a bad way) and unlikable characters.

reply

This thread is good evidence that most people are morons. Possibly the best horror movie of the decade so far.

reply

Spot on

reply

you have no idea what constitutes the best movie of a decade.

reply

This message board is far more scary than the movie. By decades even.

reply

So basically you didn’t find the movie scary? Damn you’re one badass dude!
