Interesting that even in this alternative history, there is still fear of coming out. Ellen has to live a lie as she knows that coming out as gay could ruin her career at NASA. She marries a gay man to avert prying eyes.

I know that she is based on real life astronaut Sally Ride, who had to hide her sexuality for years.

I read the Ride biography written by Lynn Sherr. It seemed as though Ride was private more than hiding in the closet. Her ex-husband Steven Hawley said he did not think their marriage was one of convenience.
