Sequel is likely

James Gunn has mentioned following this up down the road. There are a lot of ways to go with it. I really hope it isn't to get a good superhero who can beat him.

It only made $17 million domestic. And only like $15 million more overseas.
I doubt there will be a sequel.
At least not theatrically.
Maybe Shudder or another streaming platform.
"Box office Edit
Brightburn grossed $17.3 million in the United States and Canada, and $15.5 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $32.8 million.[2]

In the United States and Canada, Brightburn was released alongside Aladdin and Booksmart, and was projected to gross around $12–16 million from 2,607 theaters in its four-day opening weekend.[21] The film made $3 million on its first day, including $950,000 from Thursday night previews.[22] It ended up underperforming, grossing $7.8 million over three days (and $9.6 million over the four), finishing in fifth.[1] In its second weekend the film made $2.3 million, dropping 70.5% and finishing in ninth.["

It only cost 6 mil to make, pretty good returns for a small budget film. Very in line with horror movies in general.

Yes, but after the $20 million in advertising the movie only broke even. It was pulled from theaters after 3 weeks. I loved the movie and wanted a sequel. But I don't think there is much incentive for the studio to proceed.
Hope I'm wrong.

reply

You aren't wrong. Hopefully Gunn has enough pull to make it happen as a passion project.

Or, like I said, Shudder could do it. It would actually be a perfect fit. They make high quality original movies in this sub genre.

Where did you get $20 million in advertising? Who in the world spends 6 million on a movie, and TWENTY MILLION to advertise it????????

reply

Only if it gets picked up by Netflix or Amazon.
If a sequel ever gets made how do they approach it? The movie worked as a horror in a way but the surprise element would be lost on a sequel.

Is he going to need another foster couple to look after him till he goes to college or something? He seems like he is unable to control his emotions and would need new parents every few months.

A sequel could be years later from the perspective of citizens who've been and continue to be terrorized by Brightburn. Living in constant fear of incurring his wrath, and watched friends and family snatched away in the blink of an eye for uttering a word that disparaged him, or him killing for simple pleasure. Possibly touch on the other potential non humans that could exist, even have a good guy with very noble intentions, but his simple act of defending the population lends to chaos and destruction.
