Just saw this and...its pretty good!

I'd been excited for it since first hearing of the film some six months ago or so, and yeah, as far as movies go, it ended up being a good one. But as far as the concept goes...I can't help feeling like they could have done so much more with it. Its the scope...it was a lot more limited than I'd imagined, and I don't think its a spoiler as much as its "fair" to say that if you're expecting anything more than an character study in a small-town setting, you may find yourself disappointed.

That being said, the kid was great...definitely a great choice for this character and arguably the best thing about this movie. He's creepy af while playing a tween boy exactly like a tween boy, superhero or not. Which somehow brings in a little more menace...to so aptly convey just how terrifying it'd be to have such an immature mind in control of immeasurable power. Its pretty freaky watching him try to decide whether or not he's going to keep up the charade of pretending to respect others' authority.

The gore wasn't too much...the camera lingered a few extra seconds here and there, but nothing that'll make you want to turn away in discomfort.
I'll wait a couple weeks to say more...a little curious to see what others have to say about it.

Meh. 5/10, some decent Gore (1 scene or 2). Won't watch again lol

reply

Good to hear, we could always use more good horror movies!

reply

I also liked it, its a nice take on the Superman story, but like you said I feel it could have been 'bigger' considering his immense power.

reply

It could've been bigger . . . but not on a $7 million budget, which is what they spent on this film.

I'm actually surprised they accomplished as much as they did on so little money. I wonder what the stars were paid.

reply

Wow I had no idea it was made so relatively cheap.

reply

I agree! For this money, they've done an amazing job.

reply

It was okay. I was expecting better, and it could've been better.

reply

I thought it was okay too. Definitely better than what I saw last weekend, Sun is Also a Star (lol). I'd give it maybe a 6.7 out of 10. And I agree that the acting is really good in this one. I dunno if I will rewatch but I'm glad I gave this one a chance.

I will disagree with you on the gore though, if anyone hasn't seen it, it is definitely gorey. I like Horror movies and read about it in reviews so I went in expecting it. It gets especially squeamish around the part where
that girl's mom, Erica, pulls a shard of glass out of her eye. Yeooch!
I enjoyed it as well. The concept sets it apart from other horror films and, while I did occasionally find the plotting a little clunky, overall I enjoyed it.

Regarding the scope of the film, keep in mind it only had a $7 million budget. I would have guessed the funds were limited, but not THAT limited. The film actually feels bigger than its budget, I think.

I agree totally on the casting of the kid. He's perfect for this role and really does a great job of bringing the character to life and convincing you to believe in him.

It's a shame the film isn't peforming that well at the box office, but its low budget will help it out.

reply

Yeah good point...I never would have guessed while watching it that it had such a small budget, so they did really well with what they had and yeah, maybe that's why such a limited scope.
But shoot, with James Gunn directing, it was hard not to have built it up some. Kind of surprised that it got such a small budget with him at the helm, but...maybe it was made to be a money maker. Yeah, I'm rooting for it too =]

reply

James Gunn was only a producer. It was actually directed by David Yorevsky, and I think this was his first theatrical film.

reply

The concept is a lot more interesting than the film itself which was pretty "meh" in its execution overall.

reply

That's pretty much where I'm at. I enjoyed the movie well enough, but it was a whole lot smaller than what I'd pictured it being.
Hard not to be a little disappointed that a movie about an evil Superman boils down to a little small-town thriller.

That being said, its impressive as hell for its 7 million dollar budget.

reply

Agree, pretty good
