Crank meets John Wick meets Escape from New York/LA?

lots of these bad ass woman kills all the men type movies coming out now (Jolt was just other week)

reply

seems to be a new trend, watched the trailed for the Doorman on netflix and it was terrible...

reply

Gunpowder Milkshake is another one, along with Protege.

If these movies were so blatantly part of a Hollywood agenda (or if we at least had just as many cool big-budget action flicks starring recognizable action stars with legitimacy under their belt like Scott Adkins or Johnny Strong) I wouldn't mind so much. But basically it's just another Hollyweird fetish of displacing male action heroes to push the feminist agenda.

reply

The never ending woke ultra feminist agenda in Hollywood is getting tedious now !

Netflix aka wokeflix

Meets 1988's D.O.A.

reply

There's this + Jolt + The Protege + Gunpowder Milkshake... All within 2 months

and Black Widow

reply

Kate is head and shoulders above all of them.

reply

Not really. They are all basically the same. Kate and GpM have the "daughter of the victim" angle. Kate, Protege and Jolt have the "older, male mentor played by a cool actor" angle and, in two of those, the mentor turns on them. Kate and Jolt have them amped up on something. Protege and Jolt have them sleep with the enemy.

The same

I meant in terms of overall quality.

Whilst it's pretty ridiculous watching a 100 lb woman fighting dozens of guys and coming out on top, I would much rather be getting new IPs like this, even if a little formulaic than stunning and brave gender swapping of existing IPs.

And at least like in Atomic Blonde you saw the consequences of the fights as both characters get properly messed up throughout the films as the fighting and injuries take their toll.

All in all, I quite enjoyed this and can recommend it. There was quite a lot of attention paid to little details that were fairly unique to this film. I liked how gun reloads were a thing, not just endlessly shooting with unlimited rounds. Plus details like gun jams (world's most unreliable Glock? heh), stovepipe etc. Plus feeding her .45 1911 with rounds from that UMP .45 was something I've never seen done before.

yeah , but its pretty ridiculous watching a guy do that too , John wick for instance

reply

True to some degree but it's far more believable to see a male character like John Wick fling a bad guy across the room than it is for a small woman that's half his size.

reply

I've actually seen it since i made that post , and i misinterpreted And at least like in Atomic Blonde you saw the consequences of the fights
You certainly see that in Kate , as you say . The gun stuff was innovative too.

but with the male vs female believeability I still contend that no one harps on about it when the men do it , only the women. e.g. no one questions John wick.

its not just a case of: "believable to see a male character like John Wick fling a bad guy across the room"

Becasue how often is it just that? , usually in these films , wether the hero is male or female , they are fighting a LUDICROUS amount of foes hand to hand , who have to stick to the old 70's martial arts attack formation of:
"line up 1 or 2 at a time and attack"
.. in order for our hero to survive,
and thats when they ( he OR she) isnt in a gunfight with god knows how many enemies , all of whom seem to have no aiming skills.

the guy having a couple of pounds more muscle really is a drop in the ocean compared to the superhuman strength , stamina and skill these action heroes have wether male or female.

... yet only the females take shit for it.

You make a very good point. I'm sure sexism does play a role in a lot of people's dismissiveness.

But to play devil's advocate, with Wick, he looks about the same mass as the people he's fighting. In a lot of these action films with female leads, the women are often noticeably smaller than the majority of their opponents.

There's zero to do with sexism. The reason people call foul is because in real life a 100lbs woman will never be able to beat three guys at once.

Here's footage of one guy fighting multiple people at once:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCFNvsjMs2Y

You can find footage like this ALL over YouTube.

Even as you say, John Wick is the same height as the guys he's fighting and trained to kill. So he can absolutely do what he does and believably so.

Here's a guy in Australia who takes out FOUR cops in a matter of 10 seconds:
https://streamable.com/g2aloo

You won't ever see a woman do that, ever.

reply

Lol. You're using anecdotal footage to make an observation about women when your anecdotes are not even an accurate depiction of men either. A ten lb gap can make all the difference in a 1v1.

reply

A ten lb gap can make all the difference in a 1v1.

Yeah, so it makes it even MORE ridiculous in Hollywood movies when a 100lbs woman is beating up 200lbs men.

Lol. You're using anecdotal footage to make an observation about women when your anecdotes are not even an accurate depiction of men either.

Except these anecdotes are empirical evidence of REAL LIFE situations.

In the video with the Aussie, he's beating up four cops who look about his size or bigger. And he does so in a matter of seconds, actually FASTER than any of the hand-to-hand sequences John Wick was involved in, for whom Keanu appears to be larger than the guy in the AUssie video.

Also, it's REAL LIFE video footage of men. I can just keep peppering you with more examples, like here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ExuNuB-aHM

And here:

And here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUwa85zRQzI

And here:
https://youtu.be/HudI_BBnupg

Now find me ONE video of a 100lbs woman fighting off two or more men.

I can literally post videos ALL day of men all over the world fighting off multiple opponents, but you can't find me ONE video of a woman doing the same thing.

reply

... yet only the females take shit for it.

Because it's unrealistic to a ludicrous degree. And there are no situations in real life of women being up multiple men at one time.

wether the hero is male or female , they are fighting a LUDICROUS amount of foes hand to hand , who have to stick to the old 70's martial arts attack formation of:
"line up 1 or 2 at a time and attack"

Because this actually does happen in real life, like here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S18mOxiA9No

And here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjtH0_faSyc

It just makes you look silly complaining about something that happens in real life with men, whereas that can NEVER happen with women.

reply

While that is true, he got pretty beat up and he isn't a small woman. There are levels of suspension of disbelief. Female action heroes, which I enjoy usually, push the envelope further than reasonable sized men. Even if a man and woman look of similar size they are not usually of similar strength and speed.

Its why I don't enjoy mixed wrestling matches, it pushes envelope too far for me.

reply

Well Reeves is 6ft 1 and must weigh about 200lbs

reply

yeah , but its pretty ridiculous watching a guy do that too , John wick for instance

Why? It actually happens in real life.

Guy takes out four cops on his own with no weapons:
https://streamable.com/g2aloo

Another guy taking on four guys:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNhmBIK_fXE

Another guy taking on two guys and beats both of them in seconds fighting them at the same time:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHmMy40wcbE

Another guy taking on two guys, same weight and size as the other two but manages to beat them up:
https://youtu.be/0NPakQXkY6M?t=206

Another guy takes on three guys. Props to him for that flying knee off the mailbox into the guy that smashes him up against the wall. Tony Jaa would be proud:
https://youtu.be/4ExuNuB-aHM?t=29

Now it's your turn.

Find me a single video of a real life 100lbs woman beating up two or more guys twice her size.

GO!

reply

In addition to battle damage, I thought it was cool that Lorraine is clearly physically outmatched by the vast majority of her opponents who were far larger than her. She wins, but when she has to rely purely on hand-to-hand, she's struggling.

reply

Yeah. I liked that they emphasized that aspect.

reply

No.

It's Crank meets John Wick meets La Femme Nikita

How many movies have they done the "Your first assassination trial with a surprise empty gun" now? 4 at least.

Still, it was not the worst of them. I enjoyed it. 5.9/10. A whole lot better than Atomic Blonde.

reply

"It's Crank meets John Wick meets La Femme Nikita"

Yeah. That's definitely the takeaway I got. The basic premise of "assassin/hitman poised must exact revenge before life runs out" obviously made me think of 'Crank'. The tone and action style mostly made me think of John Wick. The girl groomed by male mentor to become a deadly assassin certainly echoes La Femme Nikita but perhaps too general as that's almost standard in most movies based on a female assassin protagonist. The flashback of her first assassination involving being given a gun with no bullets & forced to improvise felt like a direct reference to La Femme Nikita.

Mary Elizabeth Weinsted gave a very solid performance. A talented actress whose career never quite blew up the way it deserved due to the bad luck of never landing a bonafide hit film/franchise. She managed to make her character believable enough as a skilled assassin but also vulnerable & human.

No especially over the top eye roll moments. Overall I liked it more than I thought I would. I give it a generous 7/10
