why it bombed

-garish Woke marketing/man hating agenda (also see GB2016, Charlies Angels, Gillette advert)

-high RT score from all the far left sjw critics (bestest film evaar bs)

-no one liked Suicide Squad (also see BvS-JL drop)

-no joker or batman (or will smith) or any other iconic Gotham characters like Catwoman, Poison Ivy (maybe should've been Gotham Sirens)

-not calling it 'Harley Quinn' like 'Joker' (could've even worked Joker into marketing/posters forth wall style e.g. Harley graffitiing over Joker posters/award nominations etc)

-downplaying MRobbies hotness (one of the big pluses of SS)

-R rating/coplay kids who dug SS can't see it.. (might be fine for Deadpool/Logan/Joker as marketed as adult films..but this was connected pretty hard to the PG13 SS - Gunns SS sequel probably get cut to PG13 now).also its been surrounded by R rated movies so a PG13 could've been something for the kiddies

You missed the mainstream analysis made by modern quality journalism: "man-babies! white supremacists! incels! nazis! Hitler!!"

Quite right, added

This is it, apparently it makes us sensitive as if us so-called privileged males aren't supposed to be bothered with being compared to murderers and genocidal dictators. I'm not going to watch this movie, not even if it was free.

You also missed Terminator Dark Fate in your examples but otherwise you "nailed it." Great post! : )

Definitely should have been called Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey. But that wasn't putting off any fans. The marketing was everywhere. Everybody knew exactly what this film was: The Margot Robbie Show.

Margot Robbie who, while developing a huge following, isn't yet a leading lady who can open a box office film on her own.

I think what you're actually seeing with this film his how popular Harley Quinn is. She's worth tens of millions of dollars. Impressive. But that's it. You gotta have some top tier DC characters in the mix if you wanna break the bank.

reply

Gotham City Sirens is a homerun idea, but it's a team-up movie that needs at least three movies made before you can do it. DC's whole stumbling problem from the getgo was not being patient with its shared universe development. Everything depends and always has on the foundation of a core series of Batman films. Which they simply refuse to make. You develop the villains there, and spin them out from that.

Agree 100% they rushed it with Suicide Squad, a Batman movie against Joker and introducing Harley Quinn, would have worked so much better. Harley Quinn will have been in three movies soon, and has only had minimal screen time with Batman and one movie with Joker, madness.

reply

I had zero interest for all of those reasons.

I also can't stand the stand alone world movies. I do not like making Harley some kind of hero. If she was accidentally heroic that would be fine. Also, it would have to include Batman and Joker as counter points.

I don't know why these companies waste money on films that fans of these characters obviously do not want to watch.

It didn't bomb.

reply

Yeah it did. But I’ll do my part next weekend, I’m still looking forward to seeing it
