I hope it does well WW at least.

Because this is the kind of comic book movie they should be making more of. R-rated and not about being a decent human being saving the world.

It won't, 200m worldwide at most

Umm... they’ve been making R rated comic films centered around not-so-heroic characters since like the 90’s (mostly films with anti-heroes who ultimately save the day, albeit saving the world is NOT the goal in those). Granted a bunch of them have sucked (ring! ring!) and they haven’t dominated the box office, however those kinds of films aren’t exactly a new thing. When it comes to something rather game-changing like Deadpool, though, that film became a success like no other comic film of its kind had ever been. Generally speaking, the Merc with a Mouth’s film actually made a bigger impact than some might realize. Hell, it’s arguably the reason why Birds of Prey is the way it is (in case you haven’t seen, the Harley Quinn film has been compared to Deadpool).

But the real story here is, you can get down with certain comic films EXCEPT the popular ones that feature the unkewl “save the world!” heroes — and they shouldn’t keep making those ones, right? Lol. (Yup, what we mostly need is doom and gloom entertainment that’s reflective of our world! Forget escapism and imperfect heroes that are meant to give hope.) Ok, but it goes without saying that lots of people do want more of those films.

The reason the studios keep making those tentpole comic films with heroes (apart from $$, let’s just get that out of the way) is because, contrary to snob belief, so many of them are well-crafted, imaginative, and they offer.... variety. Facts. I mean, if they didn’t manage to keep things fresh with more than a few of these films, the genre wouldn’t be where it’s still at. As is, why can’t all these different types of comic films, including the ones you’re not fond of, co-exist? Oh yea, we can’t let people have nice things. Well, I know if all comic films suddenly became like, say Joker (a film embraced by many anti-comic film nerds), that would be absolutely depressing. Sure Joker is a quality film (and I welcome more like it, I just hope they’re not heavily modeled after Scorsese flicks), but it shouldn’t become the standard. Even the director of that film is of the opinion that the big comic films should keep doing their thing. I get that to mostly non-fans the popular comics films are all the same thing, but... they’re not.

Now back to Harley Quinn’s Birds of Prey’s box office fun... right now things aren’t looking good for it both domestically and WW. While the reactionaries are predictably blaming its “wokeness” (aka not being reich wing) for it so far underperforming, there are far more realistic reasons why this film isn’t making a splash. (Note: reportedly more males are coming out to see this film than females, so that “go woke, go broke” argument is desperate AF. Disney says hi btw.) But don’t fret! This film *possibly* ending up as a big financial disappointment won’t have an affect on potential future R rated comic films that focus on baddies (how serious or silly the characters act is irrelevant). I guarantee it. P.S. I’m content with the fact that those who feel the same way as you do about the dominant comic film don’t get to decide what should and shouldn’t be made.
