I was looking for a motive... why did the killer want to hunt this poor woman?

The most satisfying explanation that I could come up with was that this man was a demon in human form - a manifestation/ symbol of guilt. As we learn, the woman was running away from this demon, but wherever she went, he was never far behind. She ultimately triumphs by defeating the demon. And we hope that she has resolved the guilty feelings she had connecting to her husband's suicide.

One thing of significance that I want to point out: we see in the movie that the woman married her late husband because he showed her a trick. The trick being referred to was a card trick but, the word trick is code for, essentially, a coward or wussy. So, the killer knew that the woman had a coward for a husband.

BUT, any speculations as to why the husband was a coward? What made him want to kill himself?

He's a white male. White males are evil. They spend their spare time raping and killing innocent women.

Uh? He is your average serial killer... When she is begging him to let her go at the cabin, he tells her "Do you think you're the first one to say that?" so he's killed before, and probably many times. Jessica was just another victim, there's no real motive behind it.

Regarding the husband, it's hard to guess. It could be anything. Jessica's dad asks her if there's "any progress with the bank" so maybe they had financial problems (however she tells Sam at the cabin that she can give him money if he lets her go) or it's just that she had to sell the house or arrange a pending mortgage on it. We don't even know if Jessica herself knows the motives behind the suicide, when they are in the woods Sam is just using it to provoke her so she goes out of her hiding.

This is a helluva theory, and quite honestly if your theory really WAS the plot this would go from a 7 to a 9.5 out of 10. Wish they went that way with it but that’s not really what they were doing lol. That would’ve been way too smart for this film.

No need to re-make the movie into something different because you need an "explanation." And the word "trick," while it has a negative connotation in the world of prostitution, is not "code for" coward--can you give an example, or even a link to an online "urban dictionary," where it is so used? He thought her husband was a coward because he committed suicide, as he declares. No need to impute any other reasons, especially if they depend on illogic.

Nope, he's just a serial killer. They have a lot of them in the Pacific Northwest.
