I think it would have expanded the conflict and would have possibly have involved the Soviet Union. McArthur wanted to bomb north of the Yalu River and that is one of the reasons he was fired.

As I recall, the Chinese were assisting North Korea (including with providing troops) without making a formal declaration of war, but if the US had made an incursion into Chinese territory, we fired the PRC would have entered the war unconditionally. IMHO Truman was absolutely correct and justified in firing MacArthur, who was aptly given the moniker "The American Caesar".

Another of the historic shitshows of the 20th century. Russians flying migs, pretending (in no serious way) to be Chinese or Korean... And The USA pretending that the Russians and Chinese were not really fighting the war so a war with Red China AND the Soviet Union would not be necessary. It really comes down to the US and the Soviets not wanting to fight WWIII.
Later in the war US planes were shooting up migs over Manchuria all the time (not on the ground though, that would be unacceptable), but it was kept secret at the time and was not OFFICIALLY sanctioned.

Stalin may not have thought much of Kim, but he was willing to support the North in order to bleed the US more or less indefinitely. You will note that the war in Korea came to a halt within 6 months of the death of Stalin.
