Why didn't they trace the calls and try locate the phone?

Just watched it, loved the film. But this one thing keeps bugging me. Why didn't they trace the calls Margot made to her dad? And why didn't they track the location of her phone? Or more precise - why wasn't it mentioned? *SPOILERS* Sure, the detective could have manipulated that info to hide the truth, but dad would have mentioned tracing and tracking, it is a logical first step, isn't it? Is it a plot error? Thanks in advance!

Well, what would that give them? Just confirmation that she was in fact at the lake? Which they already knew she was. I don't see what information would that give them. I don't think she had the phone with her once she fell otherwise I assume she would have used it.

The first step sure, but as you later discover the cop is not exactly willing to solve the case, which explains why she did not do that right away or even lied about the result of the tracking. I don't personally see any plothole here.

It would have given them that information pretty much from day one they were involved. Giving them a proper starting point. They didn’t find out about the lake until abiut 2-3 days in

They would have "pinged" her phone and gotten GPS information, along with the closest cell tower. Of course the "evil detective" was thwarting the investigation the whole time. That "twist" ruined the movie, big time.

This exactly. Tracing would've just given a general area at the time of the call which was close enough to the intersection she turned on and wouldn't have made a difference.

It would have put her firmly at the lake. Do you know how triangulation works? It's pretty exact.
