I've not been a big fan of Liotta's, but I thought he was marvelous as the first attorney for the husband and the way he transported that poor guy into a completely different world that he had no way out of and did not understand.
I just think it is a bit sad how he did not get the time onscreen that Laura Dern did.
He was the highlight for me. You're right, not enough screen time.

shareI didn't buy Alda as a lawyer for a second. Liotta actually researched the part and he had the whole body posture and speaking manner down perfect for a high-powered divorce lawyer. He really nailed it, I think better than Dern who was also great, and Alda was good too, but he was just being Alan Alda.
shareAlda’s not portraying a high-powered lawyer. His rates were less than half of Liotta’s. He was the only one his ex-wife had not sabotaged by consulting first. Did you see his shabby office?
shareYeah, I saw, but he was not doing any acting really, because his character was more or less someone who doesn't exist. He was just doing his Hawkeye Pierce if Hawkeye was an incompetent doctor. ;-)
shareI really disagree. Hawkeye was very sarcastic, a ladies’ man, etc. And I don’t believe this lawyer was incompetent. Not being ruthless and maximally aggro doesn’t make him incompetent.
shareThat was the point of the scene and the character. Awwww... are you defending Hawkeye's honor ... I am sure Alda will appreciate your fighting for him ... so foolishly. The husband character dumped the Hawkeye because he wanted to win, and he had to pay through the nose to get Ray Liotta's character to do it.
