Why is a black elf/dwarf such a big issue?

Because cowardly little bigots and other virgin neo-nancy mummy's boys and girls cannot tolerate anyone non-white being in even fantasy films. America and Britain really hate to move on, but time will.

Maybe they'd rather watch boxing? Oh wait, most white guys end up on the canvas - legally.

I would guess that it has more to do with Tolkien's work rather than racism or prejudice attitudes towards black people. As far as I know, there aren't any black elves/dwarfs in the books.

But yeah, it's a fantasy setting loosely based on the LOTR myths, so at the end of the day, it doesn't matter that much. But I can understand the book purists point of view. It would be like casting a white woman in The Woman King.

The weren't any Elves who were born in the Africa of Middle Earth, hardly any lived or traveled there, and certainly not for long enough for black skin to become a hereditary trait. Black Elves just doesn't fit in with the world Tolkien created.

Maybe whatsherface is just a human who suffers with dwarfism, which is why she's a black dwarf, and why she doesn't have a beard.

Shouldn't the character being good and well written be what matters?

The point is that the characters are NOT good NOR well-written.
