Kaley Cuoco is overbearing...

I'm sorry she's just not working for me as the lead.
Maybe I'm wrong and maybe its the director's choice then the direction is annoying.

reply

Is she the Priceline ad person?

reply

she's not good.
still acts like Rachel from F*R*I*E*N*D*S just as she did on Big Bang.

too bad.
the script is kind of entertaining but not really. hard pass from me.

reply

Bitch is borderline psychotic, hard to root for a lead that disgusts every fiber of my being.

reply

she's pretty much Carrie Bradshaw working as a stewardess.
i find it ridiculous she didn't go immediately to the American embassy @ Bangkok and explain her situation.

reply

The better play is to spill her guts to the FBI when she got back on US soil, but spin the story as the guy getting violent and coming after her and a broken bottle hitting him, combined with being drunk "..and maybe roofied..".

And then she just ran because she was scared, afraid of being accused of a crime in Thailand, etc.

They're not immediately sticking her back on a plane to Thailand based on an admission of some kind of self defense, she hasn't even broken any US laws at this point. Then a decent lawyer to fight extradition to Thailand, which is probably a reasonably safe bet.

reply

I think it’s rarely a good idea to admit you killed someone....when you didn’t.

reply

It's all about what the more compelling story for why you were in a locked hotel room with a dead guy.

That you were in a locked hotel room with a dead guy you can be easily linked to is pretty much given, denying that probably only makes you look like a guilty liar.

So you concede to the facts, but provide a much more sympathetic narrative. "This rich guy tried to beat me up and rape me and I might have hurt him enough to kill him" is more compelling than "I have no idea how this guy died in a locked hotel room with just me in the room".

That you believed there was no fair judicial system for this in Thailand is probably a reasonably believable part of why you decided to leave without reporting it to the authorities.

reply

Now, you may get out of it Trial or get a good deal to amend the charge to something lower....but if you admit to killing someone in a private place in a private capacity, with no corroborating evidence other than your story....you will be charged with something. It is never a good idea to admit to the main element of crimes like murder, manslaughter, negligent homicide ( causing the death of another) if you can help it.

What's not clear is how compelled Cuoco's character is to talk to the FBI. They may be allowed to interview her because the flight crew has not technically cleared US customs, and in this case denying everything would most likely be exposed. Lying to the FBI is a serious felony in itself and more provable than her story about accidental defensive homicide.

There's a lot of ambiguity to her situation -- has she cleared customs? If not, I think the Feds have broad powers to detain US citizens at border crossings and might be able to compel them to answer questions about their actions in a foreign country without legal counsel.

Her best bet would be to refuse to speak to the FBI, but that's dangerous if she is considered in transit and not within the borders of the US. Denying everything to the FBI imperils her for lying to the FBI and I doubt there is a lot of room for her to outright deny she was with the guy in Bangkok.

This is what largely drives me to think she should make the self defense claim -- it sidesteps needing to lie completely about her involvement to the FBI. Plus, she might be able to argue later that her statements to the FBI were from a coercive interview at a border crossing and not admissible in court in criminal proceedings for activities unrelated to customs or immigration.

It's extremely unlikely any prosecutor is going to try her in the US for this homicide, it would be a losing case in a US court because the forensics are screwed. The defense would make a mockery of the evidence and the jury would be highly sympathetic to a woman being assaulted in a hotel room in foreign country.

She's equally unlikely to be extradited to Thailand for trial as it would be a pretty sympathetic argument that a woman claiming self defense against a man would not get a fair hearing. Thailand is unlikely to really press the case, either, as the victim was not a Thai citizen.

reply

All I’ll say is I am a local prosecutor and if we have an admission that elements of a crime were committed and other circumstantial evidence that show the admission can be corroborated....we will charge the person if their only defense is some sort of justification defense that cannot be backed up by any third party or physical evidence.

reply

And while rare....if a US citizen kills a US citizen in a foreign country....a prosecution can be instituted by the federal government if it feels the foreign country would not be able to fairly adjudicate.

reply

I'm pretty sure that this is entirely on purpose. I'd guess the model for this character is more similar to Charlize Theron's character in "Young Adult". Eventually, reckless and drunk overwhelms pretty and smart.

reply

Except that Kaley doesn't draw your empathy for her character. As self destructive and self-centered Charlize's character was in "Young Adult" I still was intrigued by her plight and she skillfully unravels herself as we learn how her success about writing about female maturation is ironically the driving force behind her immaturity and unwillingness to move on with her own life.

I will also add that narrative structure is disjointed and all over the place.
Non-stop jumping between Reality, Hotel Room and Flashbacks it feels like I'm having a bad trip.

Also, lets face it, the only reason Hotel Room exists is for Alex (actor) to have more screen time.
There's not gonna be a decent in-story explanation as to why she's having these episodes other than that she's batshit crazy.

reply

I got to see 1.1 during Comcast‘s Free Week, because they took away my Cinemax; but I hope that my HBO Max subscription will eventually bring me the complete season. The schtick with the dead guy talking is beyond bad. Greg Berlanti and everything he touches is beyond bad. Cinemax has stopped producing original content. This is why Jett is getting no second season. This is why THIS is the whole shooting match, no second season. Let’s see: a limited-run CW series on Cinemax. Oh, THAT’S an attractive proposition!

I share your disappointment, Alex, if only vicariously at this point.

reply

"Warrior" is on Cinemax and that's the best action/period show I've seen in a loooong while.

reply

Her head conversations with the dead guy and the music were the only things I thought were good on the show (also liked some funny scripting for the bad guys) but now those convos are overdone and irritating. Perez's performance has plummeted in quality as the show goes on. I absolutely hate every scene with her brother, including flashbacks. We are kinda hate-watching at this point.

reply

she's actually pretty good in this

reply

Great legs in this promo pic though

reply

I agree. It starts out nice! But eventually her character started to wear me out. The constant sucking on bottles and hysterical emotions got on my effing nerves. Not sure if it was the character, or Kaley Cuoco. Either way, I just wanted it to be over.

reply

I think the acting was fine. The problem was the way the character was written.
