Horror masterpiece? Really?

I have to assume that if you think this film was scary or horrifying in any way, that you have to believe that organized religion or people who have strong religious believes are threatening or disturbing to begin with. Being a strong Christian person myself, I have no problem with those who try to convert or "save" another human being from eternal damnation. If you choose to believe that there is no God, no heaven, or no hell that is your personal opinion; it is not threatening to me just as the main character in this "horror" film was not scary to me.

On the contrary she was about as threatening as your typical monk or religious order of the medieval age. She never once killed anyone or harmed anyone until the very end of the movie, and even that was when she felt threatened by an unholy demon. There were the hints that she had killed another patient but that's up for debate. I was more freaked out by the transformation of the terminally-ill woman than anything else in the movie. And you could see that coming from a mile away. Which brings me to another criticism: the whole thing was totally predictable.

The moments in the film, like the levitation scene and the speaking to God in Welsh (oh boy what a horror that is) are at worst, the same old same old, and at best, interesting to watch as far as character analysis goes. But as far as horror is concerned they are pretty tame as far as horror films are concerned. They're just blips on a screen.

To say that this movie is a horror masterpiece is really a stretch. Maybe the viewers who feel threatened by the prospect of being brought closer to God will find it scary, but I can think of way more horror films that made this movie, by comparison, about as harrowing as Mary Poppins.

I agree. It was pretty drab.

The fear of religion is very pervasive in today's culture so the movie is incredibly effective in that regard. It is not really a horror film but has a very tense and brooding atmosphere that build and builds until he big finale. Movie is the best "horror" of the last decade and the performances are top notch.

I have a hard time believing the movie actually lived up to your expectations. It’s a good movie though.

reply

why is that?

Opinions, etc. I loved it, but try to refrain from claiming my opinion as an absolute. This was an 8/10 for me and I like to think I'm fairly strict and seem to maintain a rating bell curve centered around 5 or just above. Since 2011 I've only rated three horrors higher at 9/10: Maniac (2012), It Follows and Bone Tomahawk. Other 8/10s I'd put above this: Snowtown, Excision and Take Shelter, so it would seemingly easily fit in my top ten of the last ten years.

How did you like It Follows that much? It is a 7

Opinions, etc.

reply

Nah he’s right it’s a 9.

reply

Now this is an opinion I can get with!

reply

Mark it 7. Next frame.

I've been meaning to see it and it has finally become available to buy on Apple TV / Google Play. Been thinking about it but I have also read that it is disappointing.

reply

What's an example of a horror movie in this vein of serious dramatic intensity that you feel is better?

reply

Mental illness horror. 90 minutes of a woman apparently schizophrenic, going insane.
Loaded with dread from start to finish.

reply

I didn't find it scary or a masterpiece. This was very underwhelming and vastly overrated.

Thing is I agree with the OP 100%. He wrote down everything which I felt about this film & I’m glad he did so I don’t have to write it down myself. As he was, I’m hard pressed to find the “horror” in this. Oh yeah the woman actually turned into a demon, that must have been it I’m sure. Maud herself was just a very troubled woman dealing with issues of guilt & sin. To echo some of Jerry’s points, she as I have observed as well never killed or otherwise harmed anyone in anyway & only when she had to fight for her life did she wind up having to kill Amanda.

The ending which I heard “WOW! It stood with me for a long time, I couldn’t forget it” was “Eh” by my standards at least. Just proof that Maud poor soul that she was became unhinged understandably due to recent events & had a break with reality where she killed herself. Actually sad, not “horror” in any fashion. To me anyway.

That'a a little horrifying that you think you can do that, being so deluded as you are about the history of religious orders. Organized religious orders I should probably add. Most people who seek religion do so for positive means, but once an organization is formed eventually corruption creeps in and often takes over.
