Did I miss something?

I know this is a spin off of Bad Boys, and it's been a while, but I felt like we missed something. The first episode didn't seem like a pilot. They were close enough to be expected to do family stuff together, but didn't seem to know much about each other. Were they new partners? It didn't say. Are they maybe airing these out of order?
