Robin ruined the movie

Jamie Foxx and Arthur Gordon Levitt were excellent. The plot seemed interesting.

But Robin spoiled everything. The actress couldn’t act well, her character inserted all sorts of nonsense (rapping), and the movie lost its grit with the whole father / daughter aura that they tried they to push with Foxx / Robin

reply

Pretty sure her character didn't "insert" it. Pretty sure the script had specific instructions for her, and the actor just followed them.

Pretty sure rapping doesn't equal "nonsense" either, but YMMV. Whatever. Carry on.

reply

Her character was the means whereby they inserted the nonsense (eg rap)

reply

You *do* see that is a different statement, yes?

Not sure why you feel the need to repeat what I explained, but le shrug. As far as your taste in music, that's an entirely different matter. One which reasonable people agree to disagree on, as there is no "right" answer.

reply

Nonsense is too good a word for rap. I liked the movie but the (non)music was awful.

reply

There's good and bad in every genre. If you think it's "(non)music," you're either close-minded, or haven't heard very much that's good. Or both? No worries, in any case. Carry on.

reply

I heard and hear plenty of rap and there's absolutely nothing there for me.

reply

Fair enough. I've had the same reaction to a few genres of music; then was schooled by people who knew a lot more about it, and as a result now appreciate Country, metal, and jazz more. Still not into death metal or polka, so sometimes a genre just doesn't resonate, like you said.
I'd be surprised if the "plenty of rap" you've heard included the better material, tho. Most of what's on the radio (for a WHILE, now) is absolute garbage.

reply

TBH, only Eminem could ever so lightly make me enjoy rap as a genre and its probably because he has such a great singing voice.

reply

So, in your opinion, should people stay away from this movie?

Oh and by the way... I'm pretty sure you meant "Joseph" Gordon Levitt.

reply

I turned off the movie midway, as soon as the girl started rapping in the kitchen and Jaime Foxx said “whoooo.” Too much cringe

It started off good though. There was some nice action, like the scene where Jamie Foxx fought a dude named Newt. But Robin ruined everything the movie had to offer.

reply

That sucks. Maybe if it's expected it it'll be "manageable". If I don't know what to watch, I might still try it as a last resort. Thanks.

reply

I agree with you, the rapping parts did feel like a show stopper - that's why I skipped them. LOLOLOLOLO

reply

Just say you hate black people and go.
Smh.
Finding every excuse.
Robin was precocious and did great.

reply

Jamie Foxx is black, and I specifically praised his performance. My criticism of Robin therefore has no basis in racism

reply

I wouldn't put much stock in a race card throwing member with 10 posts.

reply

Agreed. The script could have worked, but the acting of Robin and the daughter were just not at the level of the A list actors (obviously). But there are still good character actors out there.

reply

Funny I came on here seeing if anyone else felt this way. I'm trying to watch this right now and I hate to have to agree. Jaime Foxx & Gordon Levitt are indeed great in every scene but the main "actress" can't act and has no on screen charisma whatsoever & is making every scene she's in an absolute chore to watch. The generic "impoverished, stud rapper girl wannabe" shtick only makes the character all the more insufferable. Such a shame because I like both lead actors & the concept of this film but she's totally dragging every scene she's in for me.

reply

Yup, not to mention she's practically 30 years old playing a high school student.

reply

I had to look past the tough girl attitude rage against society she kept bringing to the story. She was a gloryfied drug pusher made to look like an angry victim. I'm not sure how the writers are expecting us to relate to and root for her. Take her out of the story and it is a pretty good movie.
