the story was not written in usa so some of the story lines are followed even though not actually something in this country would do

Real people make exceptions or contradict themselves all the time, so in the real world, people can actually say stuff like "Transexuals are mentally ill and a threat to our children, except for [_____]. She's real lady and good folks.".
