The old lady scene

It was genuinely creepy until she turned into an over the top CGI cartoon. Less is more in horror movies.

That was one of the main problems with these newer films - too many CGI monsters. Got very formulaic and boring after a while, and not to mention it wasn't frightening.

reply

No, these movies are the first and best adaptation of the book. Ever.

reply

Yes they were better than the originals with Tim Curry and I liked them overall, but they should have cut down on the CGI monsters running towards the camera. It stopped being scary the first time they did it never mind the umpteenth time.

It IS a shapeshifter, there's no other way to achieve the more outlandish forms he takes, and even a lot of the forms had an anorexic guy running around in a costume or costumes augmented by CGI. The only 100% CGI thing I can think of was Chapter 2's Spider Pennywise, although even that had Bill Skarsgard in some moments, especially when he's been shrunk by insults and he's a baby. The behind-the-scenes footage shows Skarsgard being stapled to the set in his pancake head prosthetic.

I think it was the sheer size of it that startled me, most of all. Yes, it startled me. More than once.

reply

Agreed. As soon as a cartoon came running out of the darkness all tension and scariness dissipated. And this film does this over and over and over.

I'm not one of those who believes that CGI should NEVER be used in a horror movie, but more often than not it's the wrong choice.

reply

Actually I thought that was a bit scary, I think I jumped when she came out
