Out of the many, many stupid decisions by the producers/director two times I felt really cheated include:
1) Downtown Derry didn't collapse after IT was destroyed.. even thought the book is mainly about the association of IT and the town.
2) Stan's suicide note to the losers?! C'mon man what kind of garbage was that? Stan kills himself directly after Mike's call. There's no romance there - he writes IT in blood - end of story.
f*** you Warner Bros.
1. They reduced the destruction post-IT to just the sewer system directly below the Neibolt Street house, which makes perfect sense. Besides, the whole movie had just a budget of $70m and it was long enough already, and I think it works best. If you're that critical of it, you would hate the 1990 miniseries, with no destruction at all.
2. I saw nothing wrong with that change, as the original book and miniseries always painted Stan to be a coward, which is a major downer on his character. There is something to be said for self-sacrifice in the act of achieving a greater good.
Yes but reducing the damage to "just" Neibolt Street completely ruins the overall impact IT had on the town of Derry. The movie, despite its budget, completely missed the feel of the book. Even the Adrian Mellon scene fell flat because the police turning a blind eye to the real monster wasn't shown.
I remember reading about how the Derry Standpipe (that large, white, round building that Bill stops by and is seen on Ben's postcard) totally topples over and collapses in the destruction of Derry. I suppose I was a bit disappointed that we didn't see that, but at least these movies showed that structure (so skillfully described in the book). The miniseries was totally disappointing in that and many other regards (we don't even see the Neibolt Street house!)
Many scenes were cut from the movie (the original cut is four hours!) so maybe they filmed it but cut it out. Considering the sheer number of complaints about the length of the movie as it is, Muschietti just can't win. The funny thing is, he's planning on taking both movies, splicing them together and making a new miniseries out of them, a Supercut, as he describes it. You know, because people binge-watch TV shows these days.
Sounds like cringe watching here.

There has to be some stuff you leave out.
Even splitting it into two films that run at near five hours.
