why was that song there at that moment (spoilers)...

i saw chapter 2 on friday, & thought it was too long and a bit underwhelming, though there were certainly lots of things to enjoy in it.

it has mostly fallen out of my head already, but i decided to watch the red letter media review last night anyway, mostly because i find them reliably entertaining, even when they're discussing a movie i'm not all that invested in.

& they reminded me of a moment that jumped out at me as being incredibly odd. & not fun, weird odd, in that it was a pleasant, goofy surprise. more so in that it struck me as making no sense, having no place in the moment, completely discordant.

that is the moment where eddie is being tormented by the leper/ghoul & having black vomit spewed on him, & juice newton's 'angel of the morning' briefly plays on the soundtrack. this comes out of nowhere, it leaves as quickly as it comes, & it felt completely jarring.

the rlm guys suggested that maybe they were trying to play it for laughs because the scene wasn't working as horror. possibly true, i suppose. but nothing else in that scene suggested they were going for comedy in that moment as far as i can recall. & while there's humour in the film, it's not that type of evil dead-ish spastic humour.

it just struck me as bizarre. like watching an old vhs tape of a tv show, & some previously recorded, completely unrelated item shows up on the tape.

anyone have any thoughts on why this is here? is it a attempt at a joke that doesn't quite land? or did it land for you?

I was wondering the same. Racked my brain all night trying to remember if that song had some significance in the first chapter, but couldn't come up with anything. I felt exactly the same way you did about it. It was so bizarre and only lasted like 2 seconds. Jarring for sure.

I'm sure the song has some significance. I too don't get why it's there. But then again, the first movie had songs that were popped in at odd moments, like the New Kids on the Block when we see the back of Ben's door, or the bathroom cleaning montage. But somehow, they fitted.

i did laugh in the moment but questioned it afterwards
