Dr. Nicky...

Is he supposed to be so incompetent or just flat out bored with his job that he couldn't figure out that Joe was lying about his identity?

The number of parallel events between the relationship Joe described, and Beck's would surely seem too much of a coincidence. Especially after Joe said his partner was cheating on him with his therapist.
Also, Dr. Nicky could have easily stumbled upon a picture of Joe if he ever searched Beck's social media. Although, maybe he only contacted her over the phone or via text, and had no interest in her personal life.

I would have liked to have seen a confrontation between him and Joe.

reply

Yeah, I thought of that to. That he will notice the parallels in their stories.

reply

Clearly incompetent if sleeping with his client.....but true, how can he not realize what's up with Joe, on many levels?

reply

I was choosing to go with the idea that he knew it was Joe in the first session and was waiting to find out where he was going with it. Then when Joe came back as a regular patient he was just treating him like he would anyone else. That's the only thing that would make sense. The guy could destroy his career so calling him out probably wouldn't be the best idea.

reply

That's a great theory. It would be interesting if it turned out to be true. Given that we see things almost exclusively from Joe's perspective, it makes sense that we wouldn't know what Dr. Nicky's actual thought process is.

reply

That would have been epic. I'd very much like to see Dr. Nicky in S2 again.

My girlfriend is a counsellor and she says that you would be surprised by how many stories are eerily similar. Relationship/cheating stories are especially similar, she said. I always had the suspicion that Dr. Nicky knew more than he was letting on, though. Guess we'll find out.
