I've never been a Lifetime fan but bumped into this new show when I saw someone comparing it to Dexter..
It's not quite that...but it's interesting and somewhat off key disturbing...and I was amazed at all the "f*%ks" they were dropping..I never thought I'd hear that multiple times on Lifetime..

Basically it's about a charming sociopathic stalker and after one episode I'm curious enough to keep going..

I'm not surprised that Lifetime is finally trying to jump into the fray of gritty serialized programming...curious to see how this will go.

I've been interested in seeing this since I heard about it earlier this year. I'll probably watch it in a couple months, once the full season has aired.

I've now seen it. I watched the entire season on Netflix over the course of two evenings.

I can definitely see why some people were reminded of Dexter by this show. While not as compelling as the first four seasons of Dexter, I enjoyed this much more than the later seasons of Dexter.

Given how quickly things developed in the pilot episode, I wondered how they would stretch it to ten episodes. There were a few slower more self contained episodes in the middle of the season, but even those typically ended with major events.

Overall, it is much better than the only other Lifetime series I've seen, The Witches of East End. It was fairly soapy.

I've started watching ep 3. It's amazing that such a good-looking, intelligent, and seemingly well-socialized guy could be such a total creep.

And I wonder how it works exactly that he is
still interested in the girl despite learning that she is still sleeping around while dating him? I mean, I don't think I could maintain an interest in a guy if I thought we had a connection, but found out I meant so little to him. Like, literally the last thing I could possibly think about under those circumstances would be how to win him over.

And I am guessing he killed his ex-gf, didn't he?
Fingers crossed for a well-crafted story.

So far I think one of the things that this show is commenting on is social media and that some people that are so embedded in it think nothing of revealing so much of their personal information and their everyday routines to the world at large...
If you remember...Joe even thought that Beck's accessibility justified what he was doing. She made everything so easy.

Another thing I think it will end up saying is how people might present an idealized version of themselves to social media. The person they want people to see.
This is the version that Joe is seeing in Beck's fairy tale Princess and has already seen some of his fantasy peel away by discovering she still casually sleeps around. He'll likely keep discovering more details just as she probably will about him.
I already see many things about her that just ring false.

They've hinted at some of Joe's past abuse that may have made him crack. I'm sure we'll see more.
But there have been sociopathic personalities that are good looking, intelligent and charming. Ted Bundy was all those things and he was a serial killer and threw off the investigators because they knew him and had befriended him.
I'm not sure how far they'll take Joe's character..if he'll just go after unsavory characters or if he really killed his ex girlfriend (could be a red herring) and everyone is vulnerable to him..
.. but they've managed to make him both creepy and likable at the same time so I find that interesting.

With Beck it's something of a disorder though just how much she likes being on display. I mean, ground floor apartment without curtains or blinds or anything? What is that?? And how does she even sleep with the sun in her eyes? And in real life people would be complaining if they ever saw her have sex, and they have children and whatnot. Not everyone would masturbate to the view.

Also I personally have been off Facebook for the past few years because it took up too much of my time, when I had many much more important things to do for my life and work, and also in no small part because I have a big problem with the "real name" thing. That they actually require people to submit their identification in case of a dispute is mind-boggling to me, and I don't understand why everyone just goes along with it. I had a problem with people being able to look me up on LinkedIn, for instance, and then bringing it up on FB what I do and where. Deleted both profiles.

Precisely like Joe said, social media makes you vulnerable without any upside. If I ever do come back to FB, it will under a nickname and with everything set on "private", even my friend list.

But regardless of my personal preferences, she is definitely an exhibitionist. I do think it's extremely trusting and naive to have everything about your life on public display, and I guess we'll see where that takes her.

I just finished watching ep 3 - ha, of course. 😉

Yeah, I wonder how he's going to handle that one..I almost felt bad for him. How will Beck react?

I still have a FB although I seldom go on there anymore. I hate how invasive they are.
But Twitter and Instagram and things like that....I just don't see anything good about them. They seem to make people dumb and they believe everything they see and hear without the benefit of fact...and they make people narcissistic about their "image" and vulnerable to their own stupidity. It's presentation over substance and being oblivious to what's really happening around them.
And a lot of these things are Beck.

Nothing like bad sex to turn an already lukewarm woman off a guy. ;)

And I just wonder if Beck really is the gold-digger her friends seem to think she is? This "someone to take care of you so that you can be free to write" mindset - I mean I could understand if this phrase was uttered in the late 1800's or something, but it's just not something I can respect in this day and age when women can do everything. But she didn't reply anything about making her own way in life when Peach said that, so I do wonder.

What?! A Lifetime show?! I can’t belive it. I’ve just started watching it on Netflix. Already few episodes in, it is really interesting and I like it so far. I am really surprised it is a Lifetime show.

reply

I know...but after AMC and FX started the ball rolling everyone is trying to capture the magic.
Not a bad thing for television and basic cable.
Maybe not so good for the mediocre network shows..

reply

Wait, this is a LIFETIME MOVIE/SHOW?
Cannot help but laugh at that.

I don't think the Dexter comparison is even near valid. Dexter is very likable guy because besides his dark urge he is relatively normal, with feelings we can relate to. His urges are only being executed on people who are truly evil, but somehow escape punishment by law. He is highly intelligent. And imo hot as well, that always helps.
Joe kills people, simply because they get in his way, no moral code. Dexter was able to love others in a normal way. Rita, his sister. Joe cannot. There's no logic, normality in him, psycho only. The way he thinks is unrelatable. Very unlikable. Unpleasant/psycho looking. Nope, no Dexter comparison at all.

reply

Obviously the comparison was made at the beginning of the season before we knew the things we ended up knowing, right?
I do think, however, think some people struggled with finding him likable off and on during the season before all the reveals.
Now that we know what he's capable of I do wonder how the next season will go..

reply

Agreed. Additionally, I will add that, this TV show is mainly for fans of "Fifty Shades of Grey", more focused on relationships and sex. I guess main viewers are girls. I wouldn't even compare it to "Dexter", that was much more interesting TV show unlike this one with better plot.

Imo, non of the characters in this TV show are likable. Joe is psychopath, stalker, murderer who is obsessed with that girl. And Beck is a typical "s**t, changing guys left and right who doesn't care much about him or anyone else. I have zero sympathy for both of them, even this TV show wants us to have them. Stupid TV show. Their thoughts told by them makes it even more annoying.
