Shouldn't a producer or someone stopped that before it went off the rails?

How could they? he would shoot security and then Murray

Murray's producer was in the background signaling that they should cut the feed, but Murray just kept engaging with Arthur because he knew it was too good for TV.

Well, Murray was stupid because he didn't know what he was getting into and he got shot for it. The producer was correct, he sensed the danger.

when the guy shows up in make up and those clothes, the red flags should have gone up.

It's also interesting that he could bring a weapon with him. I mean, Murray was a well-known showman, so maybe his security was important enough to check his guests before the show.
