What if The Joker had gotten into Travis Bickle's cab?

Would they have seen eye-to-eye? Become friends? They were both in NY at about the same period.

Arthur: Take me to Arkham Asylum, please, cabbie.

Travis: Arkham Asylum? What you wanna go there for? They almost put me in Arkham a few years ago. I hadda kinda problem, ya know. But that's all over now. I got my life organizized. Ya know, like in that funny sign they put in offices: 'organizized'.

Arthur: (Looks at Travis' ID Photo) Travis Bickle? Yeah, I remember you from the papers. You shot up a couple of pimps in Alphabet City back in '75. Saved some poor little girl, didn't you? (Begins chuckling)

Travis: Like I said, that was a long time ago. I was going through some serious shit back then. But it's over now. Everything's cool. Say, why the fuck are you laughing?

Arthur: (cracking up, laughing uproariously until tears pour down his cheeks)

Travis: You laughin' at me? You laughin' at me? You laughin' at me? Then who the hell else are you laughin' at? You laughin' at me? Well I'm the only one here. Who the fuck do you think you're laughin' at?"

That's a pretty interesting dramatization.

I think Arthur is a much darker character than Bickle. Yes, Bickle killed some pimps, but he wanted to help a young girl. Who does Arthur want to help?
