Is the Joker one of the most consistently great adapted characters ever?

When you look at just the movie portrayals, three of the four are now universally loved. Nicholson, Ledger, and now Phoenix are all praised as being great, and debated as which is the best of the three, with all three being some peoples pick. And even Leto seems to have people somewhat coming around, with more people blaming the script and cutting of scenes and thinking he'd be better if given a different chance.

Then you add in Mark Hamil's Joker, which is also universally loved and most peoples pick for best Joker ever. And even Cesar Romaro is fondly remembered, I dont think hes anyone's favorite but people agree that for the time period he was in, he nailed the role.

Is there any other character that has so many universally praised adaptations? Batman is a definite no because of Clooney and Kilmer, and Affleck is divided. James Bond has a couple duds thrown in. The Joker seems like the most successful to me. Almost all the adaptions are loved by most people.

To be fair...
All the Bond's are loved by some.
But, yes... Joker is definitely the most intriguing villain character ever, I agree

I thought Kilmer was a fine Batman and I thought Batman Forever was entertaining, if flawed. As for Affleck and Clooney, like Leto, they could have made good Batmen if given better movies.

While I agree Suicide Squad gave Leto Nothing to work with...

I disagree he could have ever made a good Joker, He is an incredible actor...But for me, Its as clear as day, The direction he took the character was disastrously awful and IMO incapable of succeeding

I also feel, His look from the tattoos, metal teeth and Bright green hair was simply terrible, completely wrong and again Made Success Impossible

Theres a reason why, the majority of Letos scenes were cut, and thats because what he did, the performance/take he took the character was a trainwreck...

again im in no way saying Leto is not a fantastic actor, But for whatever reason, the direction he decided to take the character was a creative misfire on a MASSIVE scale.

no matter who the director was, how good the script could have been, IMO It wouldnt have mattered what Leto had to work with, He simply Blew it and a Brought something to the table that was DOOMED

Now, I'm not stating My opinion as facts, I do recognize there are a lot of people that feel the way you do and feel Leto could have been better with Better Material to work with....

I just feel again for whatever Leto Just brought IMO about the worst possible Take on the character to the table

from what I've seen over the years, The Majority consensus is Leto's Joker was Bad to Disappointing...and again there are plenty who believe Leto just didnt have much too work with

but for me, when I watch Leto in Suicide Squad, I literally dont see how anyone could brought a worse Take on the Joker to the screen, again I see absolutely no scenario where Leto's Joker could have been good...but again thats just my opinion, But I look at BOTH The Dark Knight and Joker, and in both cases, Even If Leto had the benefit of a Great Director like Nolan or an Excellent script like Joker, I see no possible way Leto's Joker could have been good

The metal teeth and everything wasn't Leto's idea. It was the studio's.

Not according to a recent report....WB hated Leto's Look, hated his behavior behind the scenes, The article specifically details The director and Studios did not like Leto's Look or what he did with the character, specifically the tattoos and metal teeth

reply

That's weird considering WB's tight grip on dverything. Sounds to me they're trying to throw him under the bus so people would be interested in the sequel/reboot/whatever thing they got cooking.

reply

Nah, Leto's Joker was terrible.

I think Spider-Man too, has been equally beloved amongst each new iteration they've done over the years. Maguire and Holland are certainly the most popular, but Garfield has his fair share of fans too. Then there's also that Into the Spider-Verse movie, which is often heralded as the best Spider-Man movie yet.

That's not to mention the Spectacular Spider-Man series, which many consider to have the definitive version of Peter Parker. Hell, some fans will even say the PS4 game had the best iteration of the character. The only Spider-Man who is yet to receive any love, is Nicholas Hammond from the 70's Spider-Man show.

reply

That Hammond's Spider-Man was soooo bad it's laughable lol.

Yeah, it sure looks bad now, doesn't it? Stuff like that makes me wonder whether if Adam West's Batman was the only way to do the character justice on TV back in the day, considering the lack of budget and all. There's also that weird Japanese Spider-Man I forgot to mention. I wonder how that show was received in its home country.
