Martin Scorsese Probably prefers DC more than Marvel?

Given the narrative strength of some of the DC fare it probably stands without debate that Martin wildly would approve of DC's take on CBMs rather than Marvel's. Scorsese didn't skewer CBMs he directed his verbal statements unapologetically at Marvel.

Not only has Scorsese put some thought into his comments but he is making a pointed request to the industry. He's probably not a fan of 4DX either as that caters directly to his "Theme Park" critique of Marvel.

We're in unchartered waters now with an RDJ-free MCU. Comments like these from such a respected filmmaker hint at a turning of the tide regarding the cultural zeitgeist.

It will depend on how Disney handle it all when their Streaming kicks into full gear and I mean probably a year or so down the track yet. As there is still some time to be served on some characters yet from the cancelled Netflix ones before they can be used again, plus likely other distribution and various other contracts that would have to be tidied up.

As if they are still talking Disney + to be Family and Hulu to be the more mature fare along with FX still doing some, it's whether they decide to take the movies down the Legion, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, etc., route or keep them for the streaming side is the question.

Back in June this year Noah Hawley talked Legion and he had this to say about doing R&D for Marvel.

The question is, do we need another thing that is the usual fare? I sat down recently with [Marvel Studios head] Kevin Feige and told him I see myself as Marvel’s R&D department. What else can you do with this genre that is not being done already? When I grew up reading “X-Men” and comics and genre fiction in general, it was the places you could go, the fantastical nature of it, the conceptual leaps that were the most mind-expanding. On some level, all of that has been reduced to action. I just wanted to bring it back to its Phillip K. Dick origins, where so much of the story is about the journey, not the destination.

Plus this was said in August:

Marvel TV Boss Jeph Loeb On Secret ABC Series, Disney+, ‘Legion’ End, More Crossovers, ‘Ghost Rider’ & Hulu Plans.

August 12, 2019

Loeb: It’s a remarkable show created and visualized by an extraordinary filmmaker. Noah carried this from the start — told us how he wanted the show to begin and how he wanted it to end — and we’ve respected that. Having FX as our partner made it very exciting as well from both a creative and marketing stand point.

As to the future, that world and those characters will always be there. It’s our hope that Noah will want to return to them in any capacity he thinks is worth telling. FX remains a huge priority for us because we can tell those unexpected stories there and John Landgraf is something of a visionary himself. They “get” us and we “get” them. We like all of that.

That means there may be a chance Noah will get to do his Doctor Doom film after all given he's been talking with Kevin Feige and Marvel in general. Which could be a good thing given Hawley was saying basically the same as Scorsese 4 months ago and with Joker doing so well it may mean that it won't just be TV and Streaming that get the grittier ones.

I personally do NOT believe that Black Widow is a litmus test for anything.

1. Black Widow is NOT the projected standard bearer for Marvel branded female led movies. Black Widow is nothing more than a love letter to Scarlett Johansson's long tenure within the Marvel family. Even though she didn't get a solo film until now she was paid a Queen's salary nonetheless as recognition for her work.
2. The character Black Widow and the film is neither a direction the MCU is going nor is the film a statement on future films and phases.

Post A:E successive MCU films can not reasonably be expected to gross a $1 Billion plus just because they are Marvel films. I seriously don't think you are even implying that all WB/DC films and or their entire film slate are now the lead dogs for the CBM industry financially. Are you?

You've had Disney/Marvel 'circling the drain' for over two years so this is nothing new for you to state. 😎

Last thing. Isn't there another phrase you can settle upon other than "Cultural Zeitgeist"? It is a goto phrase for you and is becoming devoid of meaning and or import because you over use it.

As to your rhetorical question? No, the MCU is neither "next" nor is it no longer in vogue. The MCU has a forever currency built on a generation who have grown up knowing primarily just the MCU.

Black Widow is nothing more than a love letter to Scarlett Johansson

It seems more like another chance to push down the throat the feminist narrative. I wish this movie had been done before Disney wen full woke.

she was paid a Queen's salary nonetheless as recognition for her work

Nope. She's paid a good salary because she's good at negotiating or she got somebody who is. Period. Downey Jr. didn't get such a big payroll because of 'recognition', but because he's a damn shark when he negotiates. He's so good that other actors from the franchise delegated to him for negotiations. I wouldn't be surprised if his skill is behind Johannson's big payroll.

The character Black Widow and the film is neither a direction the MCU is going nor is the film a statement on future films and phases.

Actually, it seems it is. It seems like it'll be a fully woke statement about the new course of Marvel movies.

successive MCU films can not reasonably be expected to gross a $1 Billion plus just because they are Marvel films.

According to Disney, that's the average number for 'solo' movies. From Ant-Man $600K to Black Panther $1400K, $1 billion sits in the middle. So, well, that's a reasonable average amount... if Disney is not screwing it going woke.

reply

But Ant-Man = not woke... $600 mil. Black Panther = woke... $1400 mil.

According to RottenTomatoes selected critics, Black Panther is the Best Movie in History:
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/top/bestofrt/

Fuck Citizen Kane. Fuck Casablanca. Fuck The Godfather. The Top Movie ever is Black Panther.

Metacritic is not that exaggerated, but hey, the movie doesn't have a single negative review. Not even one mixed one.
https://www.metacritic.com/movie/black-panther/critic-reviews

Movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark or The Empire Strikes Back or LotR The Two Towers didn't get such a praise:

https://www.metacritic.com/movie/star-wars-episode-v---the-empire-strikes-back/critic-reviews
https://www.metacritic.com/movie/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-two-towers/critic-reviews

The mainstream media agreed to promote this movie as the Next Big Thing... and people believed it. Nobody dared to say the Emperor was naked. It takes a while until people start to understand the relation between woke movies and critics and discount the praise.

Made me feel better about IMDb's best movie of all time, Shawshank. At least it was not a random superhero movie like Black Panther lol.

Wasn't orginally involved in this movie as a producer or director?

He was originally attached as producer.

reply

Probably he likes the Dark Knight movies, and even the Tim Burton ones. I can't imagine him enjoying the ones from the Snyder period, though.

reply

I wonder if he likes fried rice more than lo mien. Is he a Griffendor over Slitheryn guy?

reply

By DC you mean Joker because I highly doubt he saw the likes of Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Aquaman and Shazam and said, “Wow, not only are these spectacle films worthwhile, but unlike those from Marvel they are doing something wildly different that is completely cinematic. They give me hope for modern cinema!” Yeah, no. Unless he knows his DC characters, then I bet that if you were to show him any of the aforementioned movies, he would assume they came from the franchise he’s IGNORANTLY dismissing. And I also doubt he would care for either MOS & BVS (the latter being one of the worst cbm’s).

Scorsese is being elitist, man. There’s been a trend of snobby actors/filmmakers in Hollywood (it’s always those who’ve been around for decades) who feel comic films are beneath them coming out to diss the genre —but Marvel in particular. Now the O Mighty Scorsese? The little fella has made it loud and clear that he is never going to accept these films. As is, I couldn’t care less how respected he is. Marty is being that old man yells at cloud. He put some thought into his comments? Well, he is speaking out of his ass seeing how some of the things he’s said are downright incorrect. “Invading” cinema? They don’t qualify as “real cinema”? Again, don’t care who he is... these comments are not coming from a fair-minded individual. A no-name movie pundit could’ve said these exact same comments, and apart from comic book movie haters, Marvel-hating DC fans who consider Snyder’s DC movies to be thought-provoking and sophisticated (lol), and even some who enjoy MCU films but still regard them as lesser cinema that isn’t “deep”, most people would’ve rightfully said he/she doesn’t have a clue what they’re taking about.

The way Scorsese is going after this franchise is simply beneath him... or so you’d think. Not liking beloved popular films is perfectly fine, but in addition to arrogantly declaring Marvel films to be non-cinema (I wonder if any of those who preceded Scorsese and made classic escapist films considered Scorsese’s gritty, ultra realistic films to be cinema), he has said he doesn’t watch them. Lemme repeat that... HE DOESN’T WATCH THEM! And yet, we’re supposed to act like he’s giving an informed opinion due to his status? Wow. He tried giving them a chance? Knowing what he has said about modern cinema, I’m actually calling bs on that! It’s unlikely he was ever going to give these films a fair chance.

Moreover, he is now claiming that these FILMS are completely taking over and are responsible for “proper cinema” not being shown in theaters (absolute nonsense). Hmm, 2-3 Marvel movies a year, which is nothing compared to the hundreds of different movies other studios put out all year long, and that is by his own admission an invasion. On top of that, he “insinuated” that he would wish to see the industry that bows down to him to put a stop to this so-called invasion. SMDH. Excuse me, but this does not sound like a reasonable man!

*looks up his previous anti-modern cinema and genre film comments again*

Yup, it makes perfect sense why he’s going after the biggest film franchise in existence. First of all, he’s probably salty that all the big studios turned down The Irishman, which lead him to settle for Netflix. Second of all, he has admitted he doesn’t like to watch new movies. *RING RING* Several years ago he stated that cinema was dead and that “young kids today don’t understand”. (Is anyone noticing a pattern here?) And also worth noting, is Kevin Smith said as far back as he can remember (heh), Marty has always belittled the action genre. And yes, if you look at some of Marty’s past comments regarding genre+modern films, he sadly sounds like such an old stereotype. “We’re saturated with images that don’t mean anything!” So he perhaps may be speaking for pompous cinephiles, although in the end he’s showing how proudly out of touch and elitist he is. It’s undeniable that he has some insanely high/snobbish standards when it comes to film.

A filmmaking god in the eyes of many, ok. He’s still just a dude. A talented, ignorant dude who’s shown he has an incredibly snobbish view of what art/cinema is and he would never lower himself by praising and even enjoying a film that strays too far from reality. If what he is saying and REQUESTING isn’t absurd, then I don’t know what is. At any rate, give this video a watch if you please. I rarely find myself being in full agreement with Campea (mainly watch his show for his cool co-hosts), but everything said here about Marty’s comments is right on the money https://youtu.be/_wr4XC0YRo8

Yeah I was going to say similar above and then sidetracked myself, as for instance if he wants narrative over action then a Jessica Jones film to name but one Marvel property would be able to be done Joker style, same as a lot of the streaming ones that were on.

It's the old argument if those films weren't raking in the dollars over the years then they would not have been continued to have been made, in the last year there have been two exceptions to that in Bohemian Rhapsody and Joker, meaning the mood of the cinema has maybe changed and they want more variety. It wasn't so long ago you couldn't fart in an elevator without a Romantic Comedy coming out, there were the disaster blockbusters that lasted for a few years like Armageddon, The Day After Tomorrow, Twister, 2012, Deep Impact and etc., action films like Die Hard, Taken and that ilk, lately it's been the mega Superhero ones, what people watch ebbs and flows and we're likely at that tipping point now.

Note: Just saw the edited in bit, the above was before that and I will add that I believe the future for some films like say the Cohen Bros, Jim Jarmusch and those types make will be on streaming services (Tarantino will end up there one day as well), it fits better than a cinema and the majority of consumers if they have a streaming service will have a large screen anyway. Basically I think it is more to do with the cinema experience now and not so much the film, before all the multiplexes going to see a narrative type film was good, now it's better as an in-home experience (less chatter going on and you can focus in more).

This bit: Several years ago he said that movies were dead, and that the “young kids today don’t understand”.

That's why some of the more narrative ones on streamers like Legion, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, etc. do so well in a field that is predominately the 16-39 demographic because they don't understand, even series like Fargo do well in that demo. It's like you say he's out of touch it's like the talk shows now, not my cup of tea however they aren't going to be because they are appealing to those who stay up late. Someone like Craig Ferguson isn't going to speak to what that age group is experiencing now, James Corden does. Film wise a story about an Italian or Irish Mob Family isn't going to appeal to the younger crowd because it is not what their lives see around them, they grown up with terrorism this, terrorism that so little wonder they take solace in a super hero film, the news is real enough most times.

Then more than snubish he is scared of the change and still has a hard time grasping that.

Every kid who grew up in the 90s we all to a certain degree feel nostalgic or sad for some changes, personally I’m a little sad thinking the Oscars are loosing pop culture relevance and interest from general audiences.

Every time less actors go and the dresses the stars wear are less spectacular and that is because the Oscars are dying down but I think it’s because the academy is wrong or the films are bad but it’s because have stopped watching as we used to.

At first I did think the problem was the academy being out or something wrong with the telecast but a months I had an epiphany lol 😂 it’s not the Oscars the problem is people don’t watch Tv in the traditional way.

Now is it so wrong ofcourse not I’m a little sad but some things for others. If it’s not the Oscars we all will find something else.

People like Scorsese are still mad about the change instead of seeing the good Side.
Yes he is very talented but he is old and thinks old school.

There was a time I was also against super hero films and angry they killed the Rom Com genre I loved but i learned to open my horizons and now I adore this genre and think it’s not only spectacle there are good stories in them and characters which grow in us with like with Tv characters that we love after spending so much time with them.
