Joker is King at the Box Office again!

Joker has now raked in over a half a billion dollars. Gee, who would've thought that actually making a decent, thoughtful movie would actually be successful?

"All right. Now let's churn out stupid CGI filled garbage some more!"

It seems Warner Bros has gotten wise to that. First Shazam with only an 80 million dollar production budget and now this monster hit with only a 55 million budget.

Universal has been thrifty for years now. Outside of their Fast and Furious franchise(which are a "license" to print money), almost all of their films carry a budget under 100 million...even their animated films. Actually a vast swath of their releases carry a budget of just 5-20 million.

reply

And at a budget of 55 million to boot.

The Joker will be the least expensive movie (not just CBM) to reach $1 Billion dollars or more.

All Hail the new king town. Partyman partyman partyman

I think it has a definite re watch factor, like The Sixth Sense which got huge numbers of folk seeing it twice in the first couple of weeks, in order to try to make sense of what was, or was it, going on, and to understand why they have that 'odd feeling' after watching it.

I would not be surprised if it is making a lot of money out of second viewings.

reply

I agree, lot's of 2nd and 3rd viewings. People love movies like this.

reply

I've seen it twice.

reply

Unlike most, I'm more surprised at the domestic performance than the foreign.

Yep the mix is way different as like here in Australia you get a lot of UK and European Films coming through with our own which are much more of a narrative variety than a lot of the US action blockbusters. Yes we get those as well and they do really good business, however here, the UK and Europe those are still made as the culture is there for them still. For instance here in Australia have a Free To Air channel called World Movies which airs all those kinds of movies 24/7, some subtitled some not and Joker would fit right in on that channel (because say Taxi Driver would).
