Lots of chatter that 2nd weekend predictions are way too low UPDATE:this is blowing up, guys

It seems most sites are predicting 42 million for a 55% drop.

I'm noticing a ton of people in the comments section openly laughing/scoffing at this and claiming it is 15-20 million too low.

I tend to agree with them. Something is happening here with this movie...something very TDKish.

That was the last time I have seen so much widespread gushing for a CBM. And I'm just seeing a kind of RESPECT and reverence for the film. It's almost like it's already an accepted classic even though it's only been out for a week.

I had to step back for a moment and think about what this means for the MCU. Will general audiences begin to view the Marvel brand as somewhat...i dunno...stale? Does anyone see Black Widow really being a hit in this new climate?

reply

Ok guys...apparently this movie is blowing up today. Lots of chatter on Box Office Theory that this could be a 22 million dollar Friday and 70 million weekend heading to an eventual 400+ million domestic.

This. Is. Stunning. Guys.

This has transformed into a cultural phenomenon.

Bill...you wanna wait for the actual numbers to come in before saying I committed an "epic fail"?

Hold on to your hat, bill. Theres a very high probability that you just stepped in it...yet again.

Stay tuned...

What do you win queen? Jesus Christ you are so immature, no wonder the majority of posters on this board and IMDb despise you, you are a joke , grow up

reply

The "win" and "lose" comment originated from billbrown.

I was parroting it back to him.

Pay attention if you want to comment, please.

How 'bout that "completely average hold," bill?

How does it feel to be right for once Queen? I'm sorry I missed this convo, but I would have been with you. There was a huge negative publicity before this film opened, and it didn't exactly get universal acclaim from critics. But audiences clearly loved it. In Germany all of the weekend screenings were sold out, which never happens in Germany. I only booked my tickets on Tuesday, and luckily there will still a lot of tickets available then. It's going to make huge international numbers too. The international numbers haven't been updated since Sunday, and it didn't even open everywhere. I think it will break the record for highest grossing R-rated film of all time.

reply

Lol...people are always asking me "how does it feel to be right for once" for YEARS now so that must mean I've been "right" a lot more than "once".

I do agree that it has an outstanding shot at being the highest grossing R-rated movie globally...especially if it gets a China release.

reply

Well you are probably right like a stopped clock every now and then, but you were actually ahead of the game with this prediction. And Billy brown has run off with his tail between his legs.

reply

" And Billy brown has run off with his tail between his legs."

Yup...and he accuses ME of doing that. He also runs off anytime he is confronted about his LIE that there are "confirmed reports" of a "special deal" that Disney got for the Lion King where they get 67% of domestic ticket gross and 55% International.

Also, he turns into a ghost whenever he is chided for saying that marketing costs...even campaigns in the HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS do not count against a film's profitability because it's all paid for by home media.

LOL

It's great people basically shunned Ad Astra(45 million) but are coming out in droves to see Joker.

reply

It’s really encouraging. Ad Astra was stuffed with woke politics, and the critics of course gave it a massive blow job, whereas they’ve been panning Joker for its rejection of simplistic woke propaganda and far more complex and honest look at the modern world... but audiences love it, and studio bosses will be paying attention.

Go woke, go broke.

reply

Yep. As someone wrote recently; "the pendulum swings". Not to harp on politics but wouldn't it be funny now if Trump calls it quits and the U.S. goes into even a crazier time than these last 5-10 years? More room for a chaotic Joker 2!

reply

This is bs. They both have majority positive reviews but neither is in the upper echelon of 95% or higher on RT

And one is a comic-book property of one of the most popular fictional characters of all time and the other is a heady Sci-Fi movie that revealed almost nothing of its plot in the trailers. The only selling point for Ad Astra was basically Brad Pitt, and we live in a post-movie star era of movies

James Gray, the writer-director of Ad Astra, has mainly only worked in the realm of indie dramas and crime films. Todd Philips, on the other hand, has had years of experience making mainstream movies that turn big profits. But compare their track records in terms of critical acclaim and James Gray wins hands down. So this is just keeping with what has come before

I really liked Joker and I agree that it is refreshing in an overly PC age, but it's stupid to think that Ad Astra's financial performance versus Joker's is a reflection of how "regular people" feel about the political climate

reply

Usually it's the other way around, but Ad Astra is just a dumb sci-fi while Joker is a smart comicbook movie.

reply

Will I get some of that money? If not why the fuck should I care. There are plenty of (in my opinion) trash movies that make a lot of money and there are plenty of (in my opinion) good movies that get no money.

This happens to be a good movie in my subjective opinion. (Comedy is subjective).

reply

Queen, I think you have finally lost the plot, I think it’s obvious that you are trolling marvel and stanning WB, have you forgot end game ? Spider-Man far from home , age of ultron how about the avengers ? And you say you haven’t seen widespread gushing since TDK, what new climate are you talking about ? Why would marvel go stale because of joker ? Do you even think when you type this utter crap?

Yes, The Joker is doing quite well. It looks like it is headed for the Billion dollar penthouse where so few DC films have ever been. Nicely done WB/DC!
I had to step back for a moment and think about what this means for the MCU. Will general audiences begin to view the Marvel brand as somewhat...i dunno...stale? Does anyone see Black Widow really being a hit in this new climate?
The Joker opens great and before the last dollar is counted for The Joker or the first dollar even comes in for Black Widow you have to come out with the long knives after Marvel and Natasha? Dude, really, really??!!

Oh noooooooose, Marvel is now stale because of The Joker!! What ever will Disney/Marvel do??!!! No one wants to see their films anymore and even if they do the box office will only be "Slim Pickens". There's a new sheriff in town and he/she is WB/DC.

Oh soothsayer and Nostradamus of the 21st century thanks for raising such cogent points in these desperate financial times for Marvel/Disney and these exciting Boxoffice-fortune times for WB/DC. How did the House of Mouse and the House of Ideas get to these dire straits??!! What are you projecting for Black Widow QueenFanUSA, negative dollars? Budget will be, let's say $175 Million and the final take will be what $400 Million?

You've already got your stalking horse out there don't you?

QueenFanUsa might project the following:
"There's NO WAY that Black Widow will beat The Joker's domestic take, domestic opening, International earnings, worldwide earnings, and neither will Black Widow break-even."

Am I right on the mark with where you are going, oh Great Karnak?

Both movies are prequels, standalone and SHOULD be compared and Marvel/Disney (The Black Widow) will fail to maintain any presence in the onslaught that is WB/DC's The Joker. Oh my how you must have been just praying for this day.

You best Billbrown in a Head-To-Head and then the Joker pre-emptively just knocks the stuffing out of Black Widow's brassiere!!! Marvel got Woke now they will Go Broke!!

2020 will be the Year of WB/DC and QueenFanUsa returns to relevancy!! Order is restored to the universe. 🤦‍♂️

Ending a sentence with "guys" is perhaps the cringiest and douchiest thing a person can do with the written word. Anyone who does this immediately tarnishes their reputation as a mature adult.

reply

Says the "mature adult" who writes the word "douchiest".

reply

That's your fault for going above and beyond.

reply

It took you only four days to come up with that?

You're goooood...you're REAL good!

reply

I don't know what your day to day is like, but yeah I don't spend my days on internet message boards. I got crap to do. But you keep doing you.

reply

Yeah...that was my first post in two days and I replied to a notification. Check my history before you assume things. I've barely touched this board all week.

Just keep doing you at your "douchiest", "mature adult".

reply

Looks like I touched a nerve here, guys.

haha see what I did there?

reply

Oh...you came back! I'm so flattered you took the time from your very busy life of doing "crap"!

Thank you!

reply

I do want to tell you that I am flattered that with your super-busy life, with all the "crap"(I'm sure it IS indeed) you have "to do", you make the effort to come onto this moviechat site to respond to a complete stanger.

Ok now...get back to that busy life!

reply

As opposed to you thats been trolling the same shit for 10 years haha oh queen, you do make us laugh, i actually feel sorry for you

reply

How do you think this movie will do in the third week? Ngl, I'm happy this movie is giving Disney some much needed competition, they've been dominating the box office too much lately.

Since what seems to be opening is a ton of sequels, it might come third (or second, who knows).

reply

Looking at Maleficent's Thursday preview number I'm thinking it may not even get first place. If Joker makes 30 million or more it may actually threepeat at #1!

reply

That would be pretty cool if it smashes the box office for a 3rd week and comes in Number 1. Zombieland 2 does seem to be doing pretty good though so I guess we'll see but I would love to see this movie hit a billion just domestically.

reply

I think it's impossible that this movie would hit a billion just domestically.

reply

I think so too. It's having another good weekend, and overtime I can see it still performing well.

reply

Maleficent 2 = 37+
Joker = 28+
Zombieland 2 = 26+

reply

Zombieland 2 was fantastic. Not surprised about Maleficient though. Disney knows this game way too well :/

ETA: I guess I misunderstood, Maleficent 2 is actually underperforming, which doesn't surprise me. But I'm glad Joker is having another awesome weekend.

reply

These are just estimates. It'll be close between Zombieland 2 and Joker but Maleficent is the clear weekend winner despite underperforming initial estimates.

reply

Yeah, true. I was probably too hopeful that Joker would be Number 1 but it's still impressive it's performing so well.
