Not nearly as good

Joker was an alright movie, but it was by no means as good as everybody keeps trying to make it out to be. And stop comparing Phoenix's Joker to Ledger's...there is no comparison. I have seen The Dark Knight about 30 times so far. Primarily because of the Joker, while "Joker" is a movie that I might watch a few more times if I have nothing else to do when it reaches cable. Maybe the sequel that they will inevitably make ten years down the line when Bruce grows up will be better.

It would be interesting if the sequel follows Darren Aranofsky's original vision for Batman: Year One.

reply

I wish that had come to fruition.

reply

Me too. I think a lot of the criticism this movie gets would have been cleared up had it followed Darren's vision more closely. Way less confusing.

reply

I like that..

I think it is being over-praised by some but I also think TDK is a little over-praised.

You stated your opinion, I just stated mine..everyone has an opinion. We should be careful to not present them as FACTS and berate people for comparing the two films.

Agreed.

Same here. Dunkirk was the last try for me on one of his films. I held out for 30-40 mins on that one till I had enough. Just horribly bad.

Interstellar was probably the biggest let-down I ever had in a cinema. Should have learned already then how people seem to be totally blind when it comes to Nolan and his work.

TDK was a quite good movie with a brilliant performance by Ledger as the Joker. But that it is now sitting in 4th position on IMDb among the greatest movies of all times is just ridiculus.

I really liked the last half hour or so. It was crazy brilliant. Everything that came before that was pretty good too. Not the best movie I have ever seen, but The Dark Knight wasn't the best movie ever either.

reply

That's funny. I'm the opposite. I think the last half hour made little sense. The riots make no sense and Joe-akwin Puho-eenix transformed from excellent, nuanced performance into ill-conceived social angst stumper. I liked the violence but did not see the birth of the Joker in the end. Only some homeless guy who snapped and will probably die in an ally instead of become a super villain.

reply

Push people to their limits and someone could come into the spotlight and trigger people to do anything. Look at what Hitler did.

reply

Joker didn't call anyone to do anything. He killed 3 people on a bus and that made a bunch of people start a protest against people like the victims (???). Then he kills a talk show host on camera for being mean. Murder on TV. The populace is motivated to hit the streets on the side of a murderer on TV. It needed to establish a better connection than that. The riots are not commensurate with the action. It's like the writer thinks everyone seethes with hate for all rich people and they are one straw away from getting some kind of payback. Payback for what? What straw?

Joaquin did a great job in this. I didn't like how he seemed to be channeling the writer's insecurities instead of Arthur's character in that brief moment before the execution. Other than that, JP did great. The rest was plot-free roaming among video game NPCs.

You don't like when people comparing Phoenix's Joker to Ledger's while comparing The Dark Knight to this movie.
