Is this his top notch? If not, then which one? He is always excellent so it's tough to say but IMO this is definitely in the top-3. Other amazing roles include Gladiator, I walk the line, Her and We own the night. What an artist. Topped Ledger's performance too.

shareI do think this is his best performance. He has been good-great in everything. Probably one of the best actors working today. He deserves to at least be nominated for this performance, maybe even win.

shareI wouldn't go so far as to say he topped Ledger's performance (he did win an Oscar, mind you).The Joker we saw in the Dark Knight was actually cunning, funny and demented. Phoenix's Joker was a sad, pathetic mad man. Didn't feel like he could outwit anyone.
I also don't see the need in comparing the two. Both did a wonderful job and brought their own unique portrayal to the role
