Cop out

So there actually is a backlash against this film, not just a few geeks whining online. EW is as mainstream as mainstream gets.

reply

Really? It's kind of their whole reason for existing.

Is Joker art, or is it ugly, empty nihilism? Maybe that question shouldn’t matter; it might honestly be both. But the truth is that entertainment doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and a movie with the message this one hammers home again and again — that life is nasty and short; that no one cares; that you might as well burn it all down — feels too volatile, and frankly too scary, to separate from the very real violence committed by young men like Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck in America almost every day.

(We’ve chosen not to grade Joker, which had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and comes to theaters Oct. 4)

Well you can't just ignore problems away. If we don't start looking this in the face it's going to eat society alive like cancer.

Counts as Rotten on Rotten Tomatoes

reply

since the real world sucks, and the movie is too real so it sucks, more a commentary than criticism

reply

RT decided for them

reply

Joker played TIFF Mon and Tue (press). Google finds several new reviews, Metacritic only has two.

RT has 72 critics at end of Tue, 16 rotten. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/joker_2019/

Looking at the first page, 9/20 are rotten. Last three pages are mostly fresh. More SJWs at TIFF?

Another thing, reviews rated 3/5 appear both in rotten and fresh.

I've never heard of EW magazine.

reply

I subscribed to the magazine for twenty years but then a couple years back it became completely focused on gay culture and I lost interest.

I'm shocked, AND glad the EW still allows a comments section, and even more glad that the comments are ripping her a new asshole for her awful "social commentary" NON-review of this film.

It's unbelievably ridiculous what they've turned this film about a COMIC BOOK VILLAIN into.

I guess one thing is true...in 2019 you CAN'T escape politics.

I LOVE how she mentioned "The Hunt" (which should be released as well, and should have been when it was scheduled) was no problem at all, but "The Joker" is not worthy of a grade due to "one person" possibly taking the film the wrong way and use it as an excuse for violence.

I guess "one person" wouldn't take "The Hunt" the wrong way and use it a simple an excuse for violence? Political bias and hypocrisy...check.

I don't even know what else to say at this point. We're starting down a slippery slope of censorship not seen since The Columbine Shooting and 9/11.

Thumbs way down is my review of this woman's non review.

You really think that a well paid movie reviewer could give a shit about being yelled at online by a bunch of no life dweebs? All they're doing is proving her point of who this movie appeals to. Why bring up the fact that she's a woman? Every comment "shredding her" does that. Is it because her comments hit too close to home?

reply

nah, probably because she is feminist SJW cunt, still mad about the Hillary loss..... truth hurts, doesn't it?

go watch some Dave Chappelle

reply

Yes I do think she will read the comments, and I don't give a rat's ass either way how she feels. Most of those comments are logical and make perfect sense. I know people like you have trouble handling that.

And I said WOMAN, and the comments say WOMAN, because guess what...she's a WOMAN! It's a very simple concept. Glad we got that all settled.

Nothing is proving any point, it's just in your weird warped world view that what she wrote is logical and makes sense. It doesn't. It's stereotyping, and it's paving a way for censorship, and the main point is...she didn't do her job. Give the damn movie a grade. Her (am I allowed to say "her" without you getting offended?) not grading this movie changes NOTHING about society, or violence from young men. It's a movie that she is bringing politics into. From now on, she better not grade any movie that has an ounce of violence, because in her mind that could be of detriment to society. I would have said the same thing if it was a male reviewer. Shove your sexism card right back up your ass where it belongs.

You are just part of a bafflingly growing brain dead group of society that is absolutely nuts, completely out of your skulls in the things you find to be offended by. YOU are a racist and a sexist...it's all you ever talk about, every day...only people like you could be upset because you call a woman a woman. Honestly, who gives a shit?

Have a good day. I usually don't respond to you, because you aren't worth talking to, but you caught me in a rare mood. Enjoy the rest of your day calling everything and everyone sexist and racist. I know how much you enjoy that.

It's odd - I mean, the trailer looked like trash inspired by Nolan. But why not review it?
