Empire & Total Film give it..

Looks like WBros has pulled another Dark Knight out of the hat

reply

Too early to say its another Dark Knight

But I must admit I was quite stunned at The Ratings of the reviews...

yesterday RT had a total of 22 reviews up....It seemed like every single review that gave a Number grade or Letter grade was giving it "5/5", 10/10 or A's....

I figured the film would get good reviews, but Its the Overwhelming HIGH Grades its getting that is surprising me...

believe it it not, Todd Phillips is an extremely underrated film maker, Just because He's made mostly comedies people dont give him much credit, but you have to look at the comedies he's made, He's literally made ALL TIME classic comedies that werent expected to be even remotely as successful as they were....Road Trip, Old School, The Hang Over are literally ALL time Comedies....Starsky and Hutch,Due Date and IMO The Hang Over II are pretty good movies...

then you got Joaquin Phoenix in the lead who is an Incredible actor...

It not surprising to me at all the film Is very good and getting good reviews, I expected it.....Its just The reviews are so incredibly Overwhelming Praising...

I still want to wait and see how The general audience and CBM community reactions to the film before we start calling it another Dark Knight or even conclude its as great as the reviews say...

I could easily see this being a film that critics LOVE but bothers everyone else...This film has a ton about it that might Piss off The CBM fans, and It may be too deep, depressing and may not have enough action to please the general audiences...

but overall, based on The high praise from the critics, It does seem at the very least be a good Overall movie ...

Todd Phillips is going to be the next Nolan after this lol

It's hard to have a colossal box office like TDK without checking all the demo boxes.

And this isn't rated R for the same reasons Deadpool was rated R.

i'm a little mystified by some of the numbers i'm seeing.

the rt rating is 88% at the moment on 33 reviews, but the average rating of those 33 reviews is 9.05.

which means an overwhelming preponderance of the reviews must contain 4.5/5 or 5/5 ratings. i haven't drilled down into the numbers yet, but that mathematically must be the case, i believe.

it's also curious that the metacritic rating is at 75%. usually the tomato rating & the metacritic number are fairly close. i'm sure they'll come together as more reviews come in.

reply

because i have ocd and really nothing better to do this morning, i went through all the posted reviews of joker on rt & confirmed that there are indeed a lot of 5/5 ratings. in fact, of the 22 reviews that gave a letter or numeric grade, 10 were 5/5 or something equivalent.

which i guess means that i just spent about 7 minutes confirming that rt knows how to add up numbers and take the average of them.

it is worth noting that, of the 4 negative reviews on rt posted so far, only one of them gave a grade. it looks like, if there's no grade given, rt does not try to estimate the rating the reviewer would have given, so those three negative reviews don't factor into the 9.05/10 rating the film has right now. presumably, as more negative reviews come in with actual scores, that score will come down.

regardless, it's impressive that almost half the ratings given so far are perfect.

reply

eh, we need the rest of the top critics to chime in. It's at 56% on RT with top critics.

reply

oh, i certainly agree with that.
small sample size in play at this point.
i'm sure the rt rating will settle somewhere close to the current 75 that the film has on metacritic.

reply

Anecdotally, I've always thought metacritic settles lower than RT.

reply

yeah, i generally find that to be the case.
just to be clear, i'm comparing the average rating score on rt to the metacritic score, not the actual tomato meter rating, if that makes sense.

i've never liked simply looking at the tomato meter. i don't think it really says enough to see that 92% of critics gave a positive review. there are a lot of films that have tomato meters in teh 90s, but when you drill down to the actual average critic rating, you'll see it with a comparatively modest 7/10 avg rating.

reply

I look at the meter but I focus on reading negative (spoiler free) reviews -- esp if I have misgivings about what I've seen in the trailers. Overall, I tend to be a tougher critic than most critics, so I've been disappointed by many a critically acclaimed film, and I rarely find a film that's been panned unfairly. I liked the teaser and the first trailer for Joker -- but this last one fell off a bit for me.

reply

i actually liked the first trailer more as well.
it just had an odd, off-kilter atmosphere that engaged me more.
but i'm very much looking forward to seeing it, regardless.

reply

A movie with the Joker as the protagonist sounds like the most nihilistic, depressing thing ever. I don't care if it's well made, I won't see it.
