What happened between the movies and this?

Especially with Johnny?

I mean, it's like Daniel and Johnny have been in a time warp for 30 years and have no advanced much beyond car sales and DIY jobs. I also don't get how Johnny could be so ignorant of advances in computer technology, and how he managed to get by without any kind of cellular phone, let alone smartphone, and no computer at all. And he knew practically nothing about the Internet. How could he be so insular?

I just get the impression that while Daniel is rather nous with this tech, Johnny looks like he skipped 25 years in a TARDIS or Bill & Ted's phone booth!

Sounds like you uncovered a plot hole here

I think it's dependent on when Johnny's mother died. He rejects his stepfather's influence so he may have left home at an early age and just does what he needs to do to get by. As a result he's been very much to himself. Improbable, especially with a kid around, but not impossible.

If your looking for a real life example, actor Christopher Walken does not use the internet or have a cell phone. He claims that the only computer in his house is the one his wife uses. His agents have to send his contracts by mail or in person.

reply

Yeah, well, Walken's weird, so what's new?

reply

There’s lots of guys in their 50s who ignored all technological advances since the 80s.
Sad but true

Johnny has been an alcoholic from pretty much his 20's so makes sense and because he's pretty much done DIY jobs, it would make sense he's not had to learn about these stuff thought his work.

I think it's supposed to be that Johnny was so depressed after getting beat by Daniel that he became a shell of his former self and cut himself off from everything happening in the world. Didn't hang out with friends, didn't keep up with the news, etc. and him meeting Miguel is actually the catalyst that brings him back into society.

reply

It seems like this series was maybe meant to have taken place much earlier but they just left it too long to make it, idk.

Just pretend it's set in 2010 or something.

reply

Good retcon. I just thought it was a symbol that Johnny is a total loser. He's stuck mentally in his glory days of being a winning teenager at karate and never moved beyond that.

reply

I’m a 46 year old attorney...and I did not own a cell phone until 2015.

reply

What do you mean daniel hasnt advanced. He is a successful business man and not tech illiterate. You are reaching here...

reply

I realised that, when I said "Especially with Johnny", meaning he is the main one who hasn't advanced. He was who I had in mind when I started the topic, in fact.

Oh...
