The "Stingray" character

Not sure about this guy. Is he supposed to be some kind of lame comic relief? He seems influenced by Jack Black mannerism wise.

I love the show but this character could really become a burden.

reply

I think he's just a gag. Doubt we will see more of him going forward...he'll probably get a couple lines here and there, but nothing major to bring the show down.

reply

I think him as comic relief would be a little less cringe worthy if it wasn't an adult going out of his way to hang out with teenagers. It's hard to not find him creepy when he's showing up at a high school party and trying to get a job at the high school to be around the other Cobra Kais.

reply

Yeah the age gap is really sad. Is he going to forget he is older and start hitting on them as well?!

The woman he brought to the party wasn't impressed either. I did like how he wanted to be a security guard yet high fives the other cobra Kai rather than be neutral and deal with the situation properly. Granted he didn't have the job but it would have been a good moment to prove yourself.

Was also interesting in the creek contest how they all forgot about him and he was able to hide under leaves ready to strike at the end.

reply

How is it sad, jerk? Don't be an ageist.

reply

How is it creepy, jerk? Don't be an ageist.

reply

Lol

reply

Don't be so serious. He's fun.

reply

I loved that when they cut to him at the party, he was playing Edward 40 Hands, and they didn't even mention it. It's like, of course that guy would be doing that.

reply

Also, he reminds me of myself way back when.

reply

He's been in a bunch of really good recent movies, including I, Tonya and Blackkklansman. He's a good actor with some humor, not a poor man's Jack Black as you infer.

reply

I consider Jack Black to be a poor man's Jack Black so anyone trying to act like him is on an even lower perch as far as I am concerned! I don't see how him being in other movies makes a difference to Cobra Kai. Especially as this is more about the character.

reply

Because it sounds like its the first time people ever seen this guy when he's been around. And his acting is nothing like Jack Black's, as I already stated.

reply

I saw I,Tonya barely remember him must have made an impression.

It's subjective isn't though? To me he acts a lot like Jack Black same over the top facial expressions, lame physical humour. He's pretty much the only low point of this show.

And then there is the point of thread which is the Stingray character.

reply

If you barely remember him from I,Tonya then you were probably sleeping during the movie. He's one of the main characters and the movies fantastic.

reply

Are you the actor in question by chance or a relation?

reply

Yea thats me..Stingray.

He was excellent in I, Tonya; some of his scenes were hilarious. I don't mind him in Cobra Kai, though he seems out of place. He's not as out of place as teeny bopper chicks who are depicted as being far stronger than their size, weight, and musculature allows, though.

reply

The character works in the dojo. But when they started interjecting him at the party and into the school, it was stupid and unamusing.

reply

When he starts beating up kids in the high school it was just too much.

reply

Way too much! It really pushed the show in cheesy/Cartoonish territory !

reply

Especially as he wanted to be a security guard there. It just made me think of really lazy and boring writing options like Stingray enables the Cobra Kai's to rule the school and becomes a schoolyard Krease figure.

I think as much it pains me I would have to stop watching if that happened. The less focus on this clown the better.

reply

OMG I love the show but I would absolutely hate if they give that guy more scenes, in fact I hope he will not be back next season (In real life the guy would be in jail for a couple of years)

reply

Yep and he would probably be reported by that woman he brought to the kids party. In my country 18 is the legal age to drink but over there I believe it's 21 he would be in some deep shit and that's before even thinking about an adult drinking with a bunch of underage girls and the accusations alone that could lead to.

He's the newcomer to karate too yet seems to fight as well as the others. Everyone is an instant expert here. Even Dimitri who struggled ended up kicking Hawks arse.

I'm ok with the fantasy it's a fun show but just get rid of sting ray!

reply

I hate that character, he added nothing to the story. He really was one of the weak point of season 2, every time he was on screen I was taken out of the story because he is just so ridiculous, he is like a cartoon character.I guarantee you in real life young teenage kids would not be OK with a dude in his 30's hanging out with them, the parents of these kids would definitely not be OK. I do not know what the writers were thinking..

reply

Yep for sure. The show can be over the top at times but Stingray is cartoonish.

reply

A burden how? Lame how? He's a cool character. They should have used him more, and hopefully will next season.

reply

he is the worst character in the show because he reps the audience who grew up watching The Karate Kid The stuck in nostalgia obsessed with the 80's the man-child...me lol
