Episode finale is 9.7 according to IMDB. Either I'm crazy or everyone else is

They're turning two people into scapegoats while saving face. As the audience, you simply can't be THAT naive. If what they have done was bad and you knew about it there are only two options:
1- leave the show
2- denounce it

It means that every employee of TMS that chose to stay thought that what was happening wasn't that bad and by turning a blind eye were actually doing more harm by enabling it.

Every character is an insufferable piece of shit. Bad all-around. I had no sympathy for any of them.

do people still rate shows on IMDb? the ratings are pretty much pointless these days...

reply

9.7 was the rate of one of the episodes and it's nearly perfect which is crazy to me.

reply

I am guessing that only people that like the show are logging in to rate it highly, but yeah 9.7 seems artificially high...

reply

I think this is a great show, for what it is.
It's pretty accurate in terms of office politics and sexual harassment.
You don't need to have sympathy for the characters, it's the dynamics that is interesting.
After all the normal mode of a show where one or two or some group of people is perfect and everyone else is evil or nothing - that is boring and unrealistic.

Completely agree. The show is a pin accurate depiction of the ravages that woke ideology is provoking throughout US society right now. It depicts a world where everyone is behaving like an ambulatory guillotine for those who do not think within the prescribed lines of the ideology.

It portrays woke idealogy as a binary, delatory totalitary ideology where people milk identity politics for personal advancement. Where it is not really about morality but about stomping worse-than-thee for self-profiling, self-advancement and self-entitled moral grandstanding reasons. It depicts a binary, delatory ideology that does not believe in the ability of people to change and prefers to ostracize them and destroy their lives instead of giving them a chance to atone for their mistakes.
The show is meant to feel suffocating, because everyone is US society today suffers from a lack of genuine communication. Every interaction is so fake and only aiming at self-conservation instead of allowing room for self-fulfiment, genuine interactions and experiencing happy moments. The whole point of the show is to stir us to do better, become better, to really listen and aim to grow and coach people instead of vociferously trying to destroy them. Humans are not binary, they have the capacity to make differentiated judgement calls about people. It is our responsibility to educate and grow others, we have to become better at the human in humanity.

That is not what the show is about.
That is not what I wrote about.
Republicans have to find every way possible to ridicule law and order, the government, trying to do the right thing .... Republicans hate the idea of justice.

Of course it is about that. The entire show deconstructs woke ideology and shows how it ends up being milked for self-advancement, moral grandstanding, leading to delation using pre-made judgement templates without nuance or consideration for personal circumstance. It is binary in that it tolerates only complete and total submission to the ideology and will cancel and destroy anyone who makes rational judgements that even only slightly infringe upon the accepted version of the unique Truth. And it will not hesitate to smear and destroy the lives of those caught on the wrong side of the ideology.

At its core it had good principles, but as the show perfectly renders, it ends up being suffocating because people end up not being able to use their own judgement and particular knowledge of people to determine if they are changed, improved or just likely to change, it coerces people to act like sheep in front of a prophet, to suspend rational evaluation in favor of the accepted attitude. Throughout the show we see a sharp criticism of extreme wokism (extreme feminism is blind and only pays attention to symbols and appearances, extreme LGBTQ++ or anti-racist ideology acts in delusional, immature and self-entitled way proving why they do not progress in their career, and everyone believes Mitch is a rapist even though he had perfectly normal relationships with mature women who had no career at stake). There is that unforgettable scene with an integrist feminsit who thought it decent to publicly shame him and gets completely shut down by Paola's magistral lecture on human decency and what real feminism means).

It shows its limitations when we stop thinking for ourselves and start using those pre-made, binary judgement templates. It casts a glaring regard on the fact that it is not enough to abide by the ideology, you need to also love the ideology, and also shout out that you love the ideology (moral grandstanding, distancitiation from cancelled people), or risk delation and cancelation yourself. It is the definition of fascism by Hannah Arendt and the show is brilliantly subversive in its critique.

The toxic ideology at work here is Trumpism.

reply

None of the characters in the show are even remotely Trumpist. The show managed to criticize Woke ideology without ever advocating for Trumpism.

You're kind of proving the point the show was making ,which is that woke ideology does not allow for the slightest critisicism or nuance. And more importantly, it takes a binary approach to classifying people into either good or evil, when the good does not go their way all the way ...
It basically favors uniformity of thoughts instead of diversity and nuance. Woke ideology is a machine dedicated to shutting down diversity and dissent. It only accepts uniform view and a single Truth. In that it is totalitarian.

But the issue is actually in the people who wield it. Too often people hide behind the ideology to pursue selfish goals and group politics. We need more rational wielders of that ideology.

To quote your reply "that's not what I said". I loved watching House of Cards despite everyone being a piece of shit. Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Lost, it's about character development, but unlike this shitty show, the dynamics on those series were actually interesting.

Also, the season finale has the worst message possible. They virtue signaled while acting out like they cared about the situation other than themselves. And the audience of the show who gave it 9,7 bought it.

I'd have preferred a 'good' ending. Where they interview Hannah, for example - and get rid of Fred. Or maybe interview Mitch and then play Hannah's audio tape that will take Mitch and Fred out of equation at the same time.
